Good Good Glad To Hear It - Pirate Press Records
It might sound like I’m repeating myself here, but when you hear an album for the first time and it hits all the right spots, then its hard not to. This has to be Wonk Units finest moment in a long and illustrious career (those last words are so shitty and corny, but they just typed themselves, so who am I to replace them), its an album that has all the writing of someone who’s life is wrapped up in every word, but this latest of eleven albums somehow feels different, a little more introspective than normal.
From the start you’re dropped into the heart of Wonk Unit, ‘Rapidly Declining Dignity’ is a straight up look at life fighting the systems around you just to survive, slowly chipping away at what dignity you have, you are defiantly still here though. You know the old “game of two halves” saying, this album whether deliberately or accidentally definitely has that element, except the halves have been mixed like your favourite cocktail. Songs like ‘Luxury Flats’ hits out at the lord land society wankers, and is pretty standard Wonk sounding. On the other hand ‘Overwhelmed’ is possibly the one of the best mixes of guitar pop and ear worms I’ve heard since Meryl Streek hit the scene, this song is lyrically beautiful and moving too.
I think what stands out on this twelve track wonder, is that when I’ve listened to other Wonk Unit albums, and I say this with all the best intentions, you just know its a Wonk sound, songs that have meaning to Alex and the listener, this album has all that, but without being able to put your finger on it, it has so much more, songs that actually don’t scream Wonk, but do, all at the same time. ‘The Thickest Skin’ a full on Wonk song with all the punk angst, is followed by ‘Complicated Girl’ a Madness banger in every way, its from the heart and you really get it too, then you get to the Chas n Dave in the modern day sounding ‘True To Who I Am’ complete with piano back up. I could go on picking out tunes and slipping in reasons why they are so much more than anything this band have done before, but truth is, you just need to get it yourself and give it the time it deserves, you’ll be glad you heard it of course.
This is without doubt the album by Wonk Unit, that’s without taking anything away from what went before, is head and shoulders above them all, its heart beats so much harder and clearer!!!.
