In The Mourning - Self Released
The In The Mourning EP came into being via a Crowdfunder campaign, Weekend Recovery‘s growing fanbase ensured that the EP would become a reality, as it smashed through it’s target way before the deadline, and it is now set to be released on the 27th September. Anyone who’s encountered Weekend Recovery live or heard their debut full length, Get What You Came For, will understand why Weekend Recovery have become one of the lost exciting bands borne of the UK’s DIY punk scene, something that they underlined with a triumphant appearance at this year’s Rebellion Festival.
Bite Your Tongue opens In The Mourning with a glorious slab of post punk rage that initially conjures up Killing Joke before it hits the breakneck chorus, this is followed by the thundering fuzzed out bass line that kicks for the EP’s title track, one that grows into a glorious slab of post grunge punk rock that L7 in their prime would have been proud of, it’s also one of the best songs I’ve heard this year. On My Knees brings down the pace, but not the intensity, with a dark twisted bass line that’s matched with spiky post punk guitars, but in true Weekend Recovery style it bursts into life on the brief explosive chorus, all too soon In The Mourning is brought to a close with I’m Not That Girl, an impassioned and perfect slice of melancholy grunge.
Following on from a debut album as strong as Get What You Came For was never going to be an easy task, but with In The Mourning I feel that Weekend Recovery have exceeded everyone’s expectations, as this isn’t just the equal of the debut, an album I bought from the band the first time I saw them, but this is nothing short of perfect, and a strong contender for my favourite release of 2018. This has been a storming year for Weekend Recovery and with a tour set to round out this year, that kicks off with a pair of In The Mourning release shows in London and Leeds at the end of September, they look set to launch themselves in 2019 in style.
