EP Review: The Lippies – Pop ‘n’ Lockdown

After a much-celebrated reformation last year, Grand Rapids, MI foursome The Lippies have released their first new material of 2020, the “Pop ‘n’ Lockdown EP“, that is now available via Red Scare Industries. The EP is fuelled by these disturbing and dark days of ego driven incompetent politicians which, coupled with the isolation of coronavirus lockdown, has compelled them to put some new music into the world. The Lippies have well and truly launched themselves in 2020 with three brand new tracks to help conquer evil and dispel the darkness and denial that is unfortunately characterising 2020.

‘On Your Mind‘ kicks things off with gang vocals and a fine riff that recalls the likes of ‘Bliztkrieg Bop‘ and ‘Lillington High‘ that gives way to a barbed punk tune that challenges the Trump regime, with “who knew 6 foot 3 could so small” being a contender for lyric of the year. When you think you know what’s coming you are hit by ‘Get Out Of Bed‘, short sharp little number that features only vocals and ukulele, before you realise what’s happening “I’m A Reactor” kicks back into the overdriven style of the opening track. The finalé of the “Pop ‘n’ Lockdown EP” takes the trio into a more intense hard hitting slab of hardcore, before breaking down into a steady skank

The “Pop ‘n’ Lockdown EP” is a fine politically charged EP that, depending on which track you’re listening to, will delight fans of everyone from The Pukes and Tilt to The Lillingtons and For I Am. Can I fault the “Pop ‘n’ Lockdown EP“? other than being on the short side, it’s all over in an all too brief eight minutes, I would struggle. This is a pretty much perfect EP with ‘On Your Mind‘ being one of my favourite tracks so far this year. Be warned, once you’ve heard the lead chant that opens the “Pop ‘n’ Lockdown EP” it will be firmly embedded in your head, although in this case this is no bad thing.
