This Is The End - Drawing Music
Being an art/music and just about anything else creative collective is something that has been growing in stature over the past few years, although not a new phenomena, its never been a big hit in the mainstream (could be a good thing I’d say), with the likes of Arcade Fire, Crass and Wu-Tang Clan standing out in my memory.
Lovesick Bombs being said art/music collective have released this 4-song EP and corresponding art pieces entitled ‘This Is The End’. This EP & art pack continues NYC-via-Bay-Area punk John Redmond’s curation of the Drawing Music series which brings together talented visual artists and rock n roll musicians to produce collaborative songs with corresponding inspired art pieces.
Now this review although is solely based on the listening experience, you can very easily get yourself immersed in the whole experience by visit the Lovesick Bombs website HERE
Track one opens this EP with a cover of the Hank Williams Jr song ‘All My Rowdy Friends’ played acoustically and sung beautifully by Chris Cresswell from The Flatliners (punk credentials right there) which does set the listener up to wondering have they just acquired a country music collection EP, well to be honest it did seem a little odd to hear a cover song from a well known country act on what is being pushed as a art/music collective and maybe I was expecting something a bit more on the truly original side. But, and there is a but, this song does set you up for a lyrical thread running through the EP, growing older and either resigning to it, or maybe not!, as most axing punks will relate to immediately.
Next up, we get a pretty much straight up power chord melodic punk song that strikes of Simple Plan but so much better!, in fact I did get a bit of Alkaline Trio in their too, ‘The Apartment’ keeps up the narrative of the party being over, but please just keep trying.
‘Arms Forward’ carries the melodic punk mantle on, plays along the theme that started the EP, has the line “one more song, one more bottle, one more night to prove that we are still young” a mantra that I do try and live my life by.
What does grab the listener with this short four song reality check, is that it definitely has so much of the realities of life soaked up into it, last song ‘Mickey’s Song’ carries this on, change is inevitable, a perfectly simple acoustic guitar played, recorded as is and put out, what more could you want from music.
Let’s sum this up then. Four very different songs in style, a theme running through that links them beautifully, all perfectly formed in there own way, art work to accompany each piece, short to the point, no messing around, LOVED IT!
Out on November 12th, you can get everything your heart desires HERE
