In the depths of the seemingly endless lockdown The Twistettes recorded their new album “Live At Capture Works“ during an Against All Odds livestream on ‘You Call That Radio‘, the album was recorded at the Capture Works in Glasgow and includes tracks from the bands first two albums, 2016’s “Jilt The Jive” and 2018’s “A Strange Play“, as well as the duo’s scathing and self explanatory new single ‘Tory Cunts‘. Live albums are rarely perfect snapshots of a band, but during lockdown the live album has come into it’s own with band’s recording live sets in the venues they normally inhabit, albeit in very different circumstances that we all hope we never have to repeat again.
“Live At Capture Works“ launches itself with “On The Table“, a plaintive and yearning opener with a primitive drumbeat accompanying the stark vocals, that is until the fuzzed out bass kicks in, something that becomes a constant from this point until the end of the album. It’s clear that live The Twistettes energy levels are raised with the songs gaining an added urgency, every track is faithful to the original versions that appeared their previous album’s and singles, but like all the best band’s out there live is the best place to experience them. In this most perverse of all years, “Live At Capture Works“ does what is says on the sleeve, the performance is perfectly captured, this is stripped down, fuzzed out, tuned in raw punk rock. As well as the album containing ten cuts from their previous releases their new single ‘Tory Cunts‘ gets it’s first release on here, and it contains all the scathing political vitriol you’d expect. The album finishes, well at least the CD version does, with furious version of 4 Non Blondes infuriating 1992 single ‘What’s Up‘, shorn of the studio excess of the original, the track is transformed into a fuzzy DIY hit that makes for a glorious finalé.
Anyone who’s been read my reviews knows my opinion on live albums, I’ll bypass my usual list of reasons and just say there aren’t many that I listen to regularly. However “Live At Capture Works“ is not the first live album I’ve heard this year that has made me question my previous experiences with live recordings, this is The Twistettes pure and undiluted, and it’s a joy from start to end with an almost Ramones-esque attitude to playing live, no excess, no filler, no rambling in between songs, one track finishes and the drumsticks count in the next song. Would I swap the numerous superb live recordings in deserted venues I’ve encountered for the return of live music, well of course I would, without a moments hesitation, but albums like “Live At Capture Works“ keep the flame alive for live music and remind you exactly what you’re missing.
