Album Review: The New Regime – Heart Mind Body & Soul

The New Regime might not be familiar name, but throw in the fact that they are fronted by Ilan Rubin, drummer of Nine Inch Nails, Angels & Airwaves, Lostprophets and Paramore, then that should open a few eyes, and more importantly ears, especially as Rubin performed every instrument on the album. The New Regime released their new full-length “Heart Mind Body & Soul” via Another Century Records last month, the album was originally released in three parts, “Heart“, “Mind” and “Body“, which eventually culminated in their new full-length album, with the all important addition of “Soul“.

The opening cut ‘A Way To Feel Again‘ is reminiscent of Rubin’s best known work, precise, dark and atmospheric, this gives way to the poppier, and funkier, ‘Surreal Disaster‘. The album initially has a kind of dark electro pop feel to it that followers of The New Regime, and Rubin’s other work, will undoubtedly find appealing but for me this lacks the menace of Nine Inch Nails, the grandeur of Angels & Airwaves or the energy of Paramore. That’s not to say “Heart Mind Body & Soul” doesn’t have moments that grab you, for me the finest of them being the album’s title track, which at times brings Jefferson Airplane‘s ‘Somebody To Love‘ to mind.

“Heart Mind Body & Soul” is an album that veers into kind of polished stadium pop rock that Muse have become internationally recognised for, it’s unlikely to be a coincidence that Rubin has performed in Jaded Hearts Club with Muse‘s Matt Bellamy. This is polished commercial radio friendly alternative rock with a slightly dark undercurrent, “Heart Mind Body & Soul” is an epic and flawlessly produced and delivered album, but it all just seems a bit self indulgent and lacks that certain something, all the ingredients are there but they seem to get lost in this anthemic stadium ready hour long release.
