Can punk rock be both barnstorming and angry? I didn’t necessarily think so, but after a single spin of Minneapolis punk rockers The Slow Death’s No Heaven EP, I am 100% convinced it can and does. Easily one of the best things I’ve heard this year (even though it came out in 2013), it may not break any ground musically, but the combination of whiskey worn vocals, gritty guitars and enough hooks to empty the grand banks with all with come together in an insanely fierce package. Lyrically it goes to some pretty dark places, isolation, alienation and anger all feature heavily and in A Little Less Ugly the band have written one of my favourite songs of the year, all chugging guitar riffs riding atop a tsunami of heavy bass and drums – reminiscent of London punk n rollers The Loyalties (a band who made one of my albums of 2013). Extra points for rhyming Fucking lame with Crying Shame.

The title track is frenetic, chaotic and comes closest to capturing the band’s undoubted live energy. Nowhere Left To Sleep, a social commentary about homelessness that doesn’t preach, but instead pulls you in and dares you not to sing along. On Your Own kicks off with a classic 70’s street punk riff and sees the band channel their internal Guns n Wankers (don’t we all have one of those?). Raise Your Head Up takes a more positive approach lyrically, encouraging us to dig ourselves out of the mire of life and yes, you guess it, raise our heads up. Breathin’ is another classic street punk anthem, featuring the depressing chorus we might as well as stop breathin’, and nobody seems to care, but then it doesn’t matter because you’ll be too busy fist pumping to notice. Brilliant stuff.

I’m not sure how I missed this band to date, but No Heaven is definitely one of the best things I’ve heard in a while and the rumoured full length follow up will be one to anticipate with great excitement. Excellent band, Excellent EP. Go see this band if they hit your town.
