Veteran Canadian Irish punk rock band, The Mahones, will be releasing their greatest hits record, The Very Best: 25 Years Of Irish Punk, On August 26th. The band has re-recorded some of their best loved songs for an album that encompasses a quarter of a century making their own brand of celtic influenced punk rock. The Mahones formed on St. Patrick’s Day back in 1990, and have been working on their own brand of Irish punk ever since, with a working class ethic and a love of classic punk, Finny McConnell formed the band to combine his love of punk rock and his Irish culture to create what has become one of the best loved bands of this genre.

The bagpipe introduction of Scruffy’s Intro sets the celtic tone for the album before we head into A Great Night On The Lash and from this point on you know you’re in for a stagger down booze soaked road. This is a whistle stop tour of the best of The Mahones, and if you are a fan of them, or indeed have any fondness for the likes of The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys or, fellow Canadian celtic punks, The Real McKenzies, then this is an album that you’ll want to investigate. In addition to the re-recordings of seventeen of their finest songs there are also excellent cover versions of tracks by two legendary Irish Punk bands, Teenage Kicks by The Undertones and Alternative Ulster by Stiff Little Fingers. Alongside the revisions of these two Irish punk classics, there is also a cover of Rancid‘s Last One To Die, and the album ends with a live version, of what is probably the most famous Irish song of all time, The Wild Rover.

This is The Mahones twelfth studio album, and it’s a testament to their self belief, or possibly their stubbornness, that after twenty five years they are still relentlessly touring and recording their own brand of celtic influenced punk rock, the album veers between gentler folk punk stylings and a full blooded punk rock, but all the while wearing it’s Irish roots firmly, and proudly, on their collective sleeves.

The Mahones – Ghost Of A Whiskey Devil

The-MahonesIrish punk rockers The Mahones has premiered a newly recorded version of “Ghost Of A Whiskey Devil.”  The track will make an appearance on their upcoming greatest hit collection.  The collection is titled The Very Best: 25 Years Of Irish Punk and is set to drop on August 26, 2016 via Sailor’s Grave Records.  Finny McConnell comments:
“”Ghost Of A Whiskey Devil“ is a very special song and one of my favorites. I wrote it about my late best friend and musical mentor Barry Williams from Dublin, Ireland. He was the guy who convinced me to form The Mahones for a one off gig on St. Patrick’s Day show at his Irish pub in Kingston Ontario, Canada called The Toucan back in 1990. We did the show and it went over so well, that here we are 25 years later!”

Video: The Mahones – ‘The Hunger & The Fight’

The MahonesCanadian Irish punk favourites The Mahones have posted the first video from their recent full length record The Hunger And The Fight Part I,  released back in October. The video features the album’s title track and in a facebook post the band explained the 7 month delay between the release and the first video appearing:

“SURPRISE! We’ve FINALLY launched an official video for The Hunger & The Fight, the title track off of part one of our double concept album. Part Two is slated for release on August 18th, 2015. This song features the incredible Tara Slone (Joydrop) on guest vocals, and the film footage was shot over the course of the past six months on tour. Special thanks to our pal Dave Engelman for his concert footage, and Tara’s husband Joe for his great footage of her.

We’re going to start releasing videos for The Hunger & The Fight (Part One) over the next month. So why now? 7 months after the album release? Well, we were planning on releasing videos starting in December when we got home from our fall tour, but then (bassist Paul ‘Cuzo’ Mancuso) Cuzo passed away (in December last year), and we didn’t really have it in us. We were all distraught and miserable, and there was no point. Life was way too hard for a few months there. But, listening to the song now – you can’t help but hear his incredible bass lines. He was such a great musician, and the song is a tribute to his talent. The entire album is. It was the last thing he worked on before he passed, and he did a damn good job. We’re proud of him, and we miss him everyday. We dedicate this song to him every night on tour.

Anyway, enjoy. There are a lot more to come.”

Video:The Mahones – Makes No Sense At All (Husker Du)

The Mahones Makes No Sense At All, a track from Husker Du’s 1985 Flip Your Wig has gone from a bit of fun during warm up for The Mahones’ Angels & Devils recording sessions to appearing on the album as a bonus track. Frontman Finny McConnell is a big fan of the iconic Minneapolis punk band, so when (Mahones Drummer) Dom Whelan announced he was going to play barefoot in the studio (like Grant Hart of Husker Du) one day, they took that as a sign and played the song through to warm up for the day’s recording session. Upon hearing the recording again during mixing, they decided it was good enough to merit inclusion on the album as a bonus track.

The band has no released a music video for the song which can be seen below.

Video: The Mahones – The Revolution Starts Now

The Mahones

Montreal’s Celtic punks The Mahones have posted a new video from their 2012 album, Angels & Devils. The video is for the single The Revolution Starts Now about the recent student protests in Montreal and across Quebec. The band explained:

…At the time, Montreal students came together to protest the proposed tuition hikes, and on March 22nd, 2012, over 300,000 students and supporters united to exercise their right to peaceful assembly.

Sadly, the Quebec government responded by passing bill 78, an emergency bill restricting freedom of assembly, protest, or picketing on or near university grounds, and anywhere in Quebec without prior police approval. It was entirely unconstitutional, and a direct violation of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly. It has brought shame to the province of Quebec, and it escalated the student protests from an issue affecting those seeking an education (which is a right, not a privilege), to an issue affecting Canadian society as a whole.

The Mahones stand united with the 500,000 students, supporters, and citizens who protested to end this violation of fundamental rights, and took to the streets to fight back against austerity.

The video can be seen below.
