Swordfish are set to release their latest album, Rodia, on the 5th May 2017 on CD, cassette and digital formats via Take This To Heart Records. Swordfish are a band that wear their influences on their sleeves and take their cues from the haunting guitar style of American Football, the vocal urgency of Sorority Noise and the instant gratification of Joyce Manor, this is a combination that covers the anxiety and heartbreak that you’d expect on an emo influenced album, but thankfully it’s one that avoids the self indulgent pitfalls that so many emo bands fall into.

Favourite Clothes kicks things off with a heartfelt and steady opener where the yearning vocals are set against heartaching guitar lines, this is largely the pattern for much of Rodia, but it’s not the whole story. This is not an uptempo punk album by any means, rather it’s one than channels the personal turbulence of emo and combines it with the melody of The Weakerthans and the passion of Off With Their Heads. There are uptempo moments such as the charged lo-fi punker Trenton Garage, but these moments are juxtaposed against the emotionally charged slower tracks such as I’m Okay (x3) and the album’s closing track, Owen, that brings Rodia to a satisfying and melodic finale.

The trumpet that features on every track compliments the compositions, rather than feeling like an afterthought, and adds depth to Rodia. This is an album that covers everything from the standard subjects that the emo genre covers including mental health, heartbreak and existentialism, but rather than this being an album that wallows in self doubt and selfism this comes across as an upbeat album that embraces the more charged side of the emo scene. The emo stylings on Rodia are combined with a few well chosen punk influences to create an impressive album, and it’s one that makes a welcome addition to the impressive roster than Take This To Heart Records are steadily building

The Other Stars new, and possibly their last, album is entitled The Day We Met, fittingly enough the day that some people get to hear this stellar band may be the last. If you already miss bands like Piebald and Modern Baseball this album is going to fill your void, but sadly you may already start missing The Other Stars. The Day We Met is due out on April 28th on CD and digital formats via Take This To Heart Records and 10% of every purchase will go to support The Organization For The Pursuit of Happiness.

Everyone I Know starts The Day We Met in a melancholy fashion that’s reminiscent of an angry R.E.M. before Future Distant History dispels any notion that this is going to be a downbeat affair with an energetic heartfelt blast of emotive pop punk. Fragile! builds on the feeling that I got that The Other Stars are bowing out on a high note, as this track continues the infectious and impassioned feel that the album. The Day We Met veers across styles on it’s eight tracks, varying between the anthemic, Flood and Castle Hill, the full tilt pop punkers, Mr. Boston, and the mellow title track and the closing number Wasted, that both suit the feeling that this is an epitaph for a band whose time was coming.

The Day We Met is a step forward from their last release, We Were Kids, but sadly it’s a last step as The Other Stars are no more. A large part of the reason The Other Stars are no longer able to continue as a band was due to mental health issues that Connor Bird has been struggling with for a long time, it takes a lot of courage to go public about such a personal subject and if the band doesn’t resurface in the future, then the fact that he’s started a non-profit organization, The Organization For The Pursuit of Happiness, to help people struggling with mental health disorders is a fitting memorial to a band that shone brightly but all too briefly.

Super American released their seven track mini album, Disposable, yesterday, the 7th April 2017 on CD and Digital formats via Take This To Heart Records. The cover art for Disposable is somewhat ambiguous, the roller blades and pineapple don’t give much of a clue of what to expect, and perusal of their Facebook page doesn’t clarify matters, other than 2017 apparently being the year of the pineapple. Any ambiguity is cleared up the minute you drop the needle, as before you get to the first chorus you have a pretty good idea of what Super American are all about.

Disposable kicks things off with a slice of summery breezy pop punk in the form of the opening track, Sloppy Jazz, Feeling Better and Dearly Beloved follow in the opening numbers footsteps, providing a bright upbeat sunny soundtrack before the album takes the obligatory melancholy turn with the acoustic strains of Missing Pieces. Disposable promptly picks itself up from this downbeat interlude and returns to what Super American do best, the chirpy melodic bubblegum pop punk of Dumb and Congratulations mark a return to form before Rebel’s Yell closes Disposable in an inevitably anthemic style.

Disposable is an album that doesn’t contain any surprises, Super American have provided seven cuts of upbeat pop punk that recalls the glory days of that genre, this is an album that will appeal to fans of early Bowling For Soup, Weezer and Blink 182, and that pretty much tells you everything you need to know. This album might not be an original concept, but what Disposable is is a welcome reminder of just how good a pop punk release can be.

A Glimpse Of Self Joy

The Massachusetts based independent label Take This To Heart Records are releasing Fossil Youth‘s new album, A Glimpse Of Self Joy, on November 4th. This is their debut full length and follows on from their 2015 Intertwined With You EP. The Oklahoma quartet have recruited Jay Maas to produce and mix the album after his sterling work on releases by Citizen, The Menzingers and Somos.

A Glimpse Of Self Joy is an album of emo influenced pop punk that veers between the mid paced and melancholy numbers that drift over you in a not unpleasant manner, alongside the prominent influences that were previously mentioned, there are hints of math rock and post hardcore thrown into the mix, but for all their accomplishments I can’t shake the feeling that the album is missing a key ingredient. A Glimpse Of Self Joy is an album that ebbs and flows across it’s twelve tracks, all the while maintaining their signature sound, but it never quite seems to get into gear and put it’s foot down.

I found myself urging A Glimpse Of Self Joy to have something to lift it, as this is by no means a bad album, but it’s missing something to make it stand out from the pack. The compositions on the album are deeply personal and the album skillfully sits astride to worlds of emo and the more downbeat side of pop punk, but for me you can’t encapsulate the human condition without including the upbeat side and this album, somewhat ironically, seems to be missing the very thing the album title suggests, A Glimpse Of Self Joy.
