Ohio’s Jetty Bones is the result of the musical endeavours of Kelc Galluzzo, who utilizes a core group of friends that help bring the project to life on stage. Whilst Jetty Bones is technically a solo project, it’s one that carries a full band mentality that means this project is anything but the efforts of one person. The Old Women EP is the story of progress, growth, and the development of human connection, something that is often overlooked in today’s society. In a world so focused on outward appearances, Old Women takes you on a journey through one girl’s mental and emotional attempts to attach to something in a more genuine way.

The opening track Clear Honey boasts a driving riff that is highlighted by the clear and strident vocals, that can carry an aggressive growl or be sweet as the song’s title, Innocent Party changes the pace of the EP with an acoustic led number that brings the pace down. No Lover swiftly returns to the EP’s strengths of blending indie and some alternative touches that mean that the Jetty Bones carry more muscle than many of their contemporaries, whilst the final two tracks, Morning Clothes and Strokes, ease you out of the EP with two tracks that contain Jetty Bones signature soaring vocals and delicate musicianship.

The songs on the Old Women EP boast a distinct indie vibe, but they also carry some of the strength of alt rock that backs up some heartfelt lyrics. Whilst Jetty Bones mellower moments aren’t quite to my taste the tracks Clear Honey and No Lover stand out on the Old Women EP, and if you’re a fan of the other bands on their recent US tour, The Wonder Years, The Obsessives and Laura Stevenson, then you need to investigate Jetty Bones, and if you were on that tour I’d imagine you’re already converted to their cause.

The Old Women EP was released on the 6th October and is now available to order via Take This To Heart Records here

Kali Masi started life back in 2011 after the members previous outfits had imploded, from the off they blended the punk and hardcore of their youth with the new wave of emo bands that was sweeping their local scene. Since their formation they have built up towards the release of their debut album, Wind Instrument, with a series of single and EP releases, as well as a relentless touring schedule that has seen them criss cross North America, now Wind Instrument is set to be released on the 2nd October via Take This To Heart Records.

Some Friends opens with some very gentle strings before the track explodes into life to deliver a short sharp opener, Wind Instrument is an album that embraces many influences and blends them with their punk influences. Tracks such as Her Palms Were Read, Jejune and Reccourring (II) offer a more subtle outlet than the opening track but they are no less full blooded, whilst the staccato assault of Powerline Days brings the pace of the album down, but not at the expense of the energy of the album. Ghost (The Pottery Scene) and Lunger offer Wind Instrument‘s only relatively mellow moments before they return to what they do best as Your Other Left and Sputter kick Wind Instrument back into life before CA brings the album to fittingly epic and sprawling finale.

Kali Masi might have taken on a broader range of influences but they’ve remained true to their punk rock roots, whilst elements of emo and math rock are present they are are assimilated into their punk rock sound rather than overriding or dissipating the energy of their impressive debut album. Kali Masi have produced an impressive full length, whilst it never quite lives up to the promise of the explosive opener, Some Friends, this is an album that brings together disparate influences to produce a heartfelt and energetic debut.

Wind Instrument can be pre-ordered via Take This To Heart Records here

Dead Leaves Vultures

Dead Leaves

The trio that makes up Dead Leaves openly acknowledge their debt to the Cleveland punk scene that both spawned and supported two of the members, Elliot Blair and Alex Tucker, previous outfit, Call It Fiction. As Dead Leaves were formed after they met their third member, Gene Bernardo, when they played a show at his house, then it’s clear that their roots are well and truly embedded in their local punk scene. Vultures follows on from Dead Leaves self titled debut EP and is released today on all formats via Take This To Heart Records.

Death And Taxes starts Vultures out in a mellow manner that kicks up a gear at the midway point, although the album maintains a restrained punk vibe that falls somewhere between folk punk and punk rock. The enchanting Sunrise carries the feel of fifties rock ‘n roll ballad whilst Hopeless Dweller brings the tempo down with an impassioned number, and at the halfway point Vultures kicks into life with a Bloodshot. The flip side of Vultures repeats the pattern of the first handful of tracks, including the stunning track Die Young, that build up the tempo and incorporate elements of punk rock, rock ‘n roll, indie and folk punk to impressive effect.

Vultures is an album that focuses on the exploitation of powerlessness and vulnerability, making the album’s title a poignant one, and the style of this debut full length suits the nature of the material perfectly. Vultures contains all the elements that were present on their impressive debut EP, but everything has more depth making Vultures an impressive step forward for the band, albeit one that has had a long incubation period since the bands debut EP was released back in 2014. In Vultures the Dead Leaves have delivered an album that shows that the long wait, and the painstaking writing process that was involved in the creation of their debut full length, was worth the wait.

Vultures can be ordered on CD, vinyl and digital formats via Take This To Heart Records here

Swordfish Rodia

Rating: 3.5/5

Swordfish are set to release their latest album, Rodia, on the 5th May 2017 on CD, cassette and digital formats via Take This To Heart Records. Swordfish are a band that wear their influences on their sleeves and take their cues from the haunting guitar style of American Football, the vocal urgency of Sorority Noise and the instant gratification of Joyce Manor, this is a combination that covers the anxiety and heartbreak that you’d expect on an emo influenced album, but thankfully it’s one that avoids the self indulgent pitfalls that so many emo bands fall into.

Favourite Clothes kicks things off with a heartfelt and steady opener where the yearning vocals are set against heartaching guitar lines, this is largely the pattern for much of Rodia, but it’s not the whole story. This is not an uptempo punk album by any means, rather it’s one than channels the personal turbulence of emo and combines it with the melody of The Weakerthans and the passion of Off With Their Heads. There are uptempo moments such as the charged lo-fi punker Trenton Garage, but these moments are juxtaposed against the emotionally charged slower tracks such as I’m Okay (x3) and the album’s closing track, Owen, that brings Rodia to a satisfying and melodic finale.

The trumpet that features on every track compliments the compositions, rather than feeling like an afterthought, and adds depth to Rodia. This is an album that covers everything from the standard subjects that the emo genre covers including mental health, heartbreak and existentialism, but rather than this being an album that wallows in self doubt and selfism this comes across as an upbeat album that embraces the more charged side of the emo scene. The emo stylings on Rodia are combined with a few well chosen punk influences to create an impressive album, and it’s one that makes a welcome addition to the impressive roster than Take This To Heart Records are steadily building

Rodia can be pre-ordered via Take This To Heart Records here

The Day We Met

Take This To Heart Records
By

Rating: 4/5

The Other Stars new, and possibly their last, album is entitled The Day We Met, fittingly enough the day that some people get to hear this stellar band may be the last. If you already miss bands like Piebald and Modern Baseball this album is going to fill your void, but sadly you may already start missing The Other Stars. The Day We Met is due out on April 28th on CD and digital formats via Take This To Heart Records and 10% of every purchase will go to support The Organization For The Pursuit of Happiness.

Everyone I Know starts The Day We Met in a melancholy fashion that’s reminiscent of an angry R.E.M. before Future Distant History dispels any notion that this is going to be a downbeat affair with an energetic heartfelt blast of emotive pop punk. Fragile! builds on the feeling that I got that The Other Stars are bowing out on a high note, as this track continues the infectious and impassioned feel that the album. The Day We Met veers across styles on it’s eight tracks, varying between the anthemic, Flood and Castle Hill, the full tilt pop punkers, Mr. Boston, and the mellow title track and the closing number Wasted, that both suit the feeling that this is an epitaph for a band whose time was coming.

The Day We Met is a step forward from their last release, We Were Kids, but sadly it’s a last step as The Other Stars are no more. A large part of the reason The Other Stars are no longer able to continue as a band was due to mental health issues that Connor Bird has been struggling with for a long time, it takes a lot of courage to go public about such a personal subject and if the band doesn’t resurface in the future, then the fact that he’s started a non-profit organization, The Organization For The Pursuit of Happiness, to help people struggling with mental health disorders is a fitting memorial to a band that shone brightly but all too briefly.

You can pre-order The Day We Met here and stream the album here
