A Little Less Put Together

Arizona based indie punks Sundressed released their debut album, A Little Less Put Together, yesterday, March 24th 2017, via Animal Style Records, the album follows in the wake of a split single and two EP’s and will available on CD, vinyl, including a teal and cream split and clear with purple swirl variants, and download formats. The release of A Little Less Put Together represents the culmination of the last two years, an album that builds on their previous releases and embraces influences such as Saves The Day, Reliant K and Motion City Soundtrack.

Of Course kicks things off with an upbeat slice of pop punk with a soaring chorus, after this things head out west with the country tinged Mill Ave And Broadway and the album continues in this breezy style, whilst it does encompass other styles across it’s eleven tracks, at the core of it’s being it has a pure pop punk heart. A Little Less Put Together marks a steady move forward from the release where I first encountered them, a split single with Secret Stuff in July 2016, and everything seems to be just a little bit more polished and slick than they were last summer.

Throughout A Little Less Put Together there is a continuous melodic sensibility that permeates the whole of the album, one that has a distinctly sweet and summery feel to it with it’s lush harmonies and laid back feel. For some this release may be a little too sweet and sickly, as there is no discordant element or apparent fury, but this is a band that are not afraid to take on the heavier issues, but it’s all done with an optimistic and hopeful attitude, and as spring is approaching then this album of warm sunny pop punk may well be the soundtrack to your summer.

Phoenix’s Sundressed and Nashville’s Secret Stuff will release this four song split seven inch single via Spartan Records on July 29th. This is a DIY indie release that is being released to commemorate both bands heading out on the road together. Both Sundressed and Secret Stuff have each contributed two new tracks to the EP, both of which will presumably get an airing when they embark on their US tour this summer.

This is Secret Stuff‘s first new material since the release of the This Is Fine EP earlier this year. They have contributed two more tracks that are true to their emo style, the heartfelt lyrics and earnest delivery jars slightly with the discordant musical delivery on their first contribution, the second track, whilst more accessible, remains firmly rooted in nineties emo territory. Sundressed contribute two tracks of yearning melodic punk that is delivered with a sparse minimalist approach, this style is underpinned by the acoustic number that closes the Split EP. Both bands, and all four tracks, compliment each other perfectly, of course how much you’ll enjoy this depends on how much you like emo influenced indie and punk, but if this is something that appeals to you then this single, and their tour, are things you should be seriously considering investing your pennies in.

This is by no means a disagreeable release, it is a downbeat affair that won’t be to everyone’s taste but with the dominant emo influence present this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. These are two bands who are geographically disparate, who despite the differing approaches are both invoking the same spirt in their music and are both doing things on their own terms. Both bands will be undertaking an extensive US tour together this summer, along with Daisyhead, Northbound, The Other Stars and Casey Bolle.

Pre-orders for the split are now available via Spartan Records here. All pre-orders include an instant download of Sundressed‘s Autopilot and a full high quality download of the EP on July 29th. The vinyl, which is available on a stunning array of colours, will ship in August.

When it comes to pop-punk, there always seems to be a bit of a divide.  On the one hand you have the proprietors of the modern scene – those like State Champs and Seaway.  On the other you have the pillars of the old guard – those like Teenage Bottlerocket and Motion City Soundtrack.  While some generational overlap might exist depending on audience, there’s usually a pretty prominent preferential divide.  A few lone sparks manage to bridge the divide – namely The Wonder Years and The Hotelier – but otherwise it’s a fairly segregated scene.  So it’s always exciting when a new contender comes on by.

For new blood, look no further than Arizona emotive pop-punk act Sundressed.  Having self-released their debut full length a few years back, the band’s wide appeal quickly caught the eye of Take This To Heart Records and led to their first EP, Dig Up A Miracle.  Now, in the same calendar year, the quartet returns with their second EP in under eight months, The Same Condition.

Central to Sundressed’s easy appeal is the combination of maturity and catchy chorus work.  Calmly dropped opening chords roll slowly across the first moments of “Good As You,” almost like something you’d expect from the post-punk realm.  The tunefully spoken intro sets up a settled, confident scene from which the band edges towards more pop flavoured fun.  Before long, “Beck And Call” breaks out Trevor Hedges’ snarky attitude, punctuated with a stop n’ go tempo in which riffs slowly build into a full blown sing along chorus that should have even your snobby thirty-something cousin tapping his foot.

But The Same Condition really takes off on a lyrical level during the final half.  “Ordinary Day” invokes the first instance of somewhat self-destructive self-reflection.  With the support of a band worth of backing vocals, the band leads the charge with the proclamation, “so I’ll write the songs you want to hear, the same songs that you’ve heard for years, I’ll stumble through the same old clumsy chords.”  With a heightened sense of sincerity, the band seems to understand their insignificant position in what has become a somewhat marginalized scene over the past decade.

Yet their message rings with the strength of resistance.  With “Every Part Is Moving,” Sundressed goes on to produce somewhat of a manifesto for a scene that refuses to give in to the sex-appeal and over-produced shortcuts that get artists to the mainstream.  “Inconsistent, out of key, sing all the wrong harmonies, we rely on body parts, to become a work of art,” sings Hedges’ forcefully, taking a stab at bands that mindlessly give in to temptation.  The irony of the lofty, super-catchy chorus isn’t lost on Sundressed as they harness the power of polished pop melody to mirror the effect in good taste.

Sundressed draws upon a wide range of pop-punk influences, in effect realizing an equally vast potential for appeal.  The hybrid catchy and mature nature of The Same Condition should find an audience with the younger crowd as well as aging pop-punkers looking for something new outside of the typical cookie cutter pop bands masquerading as punk acts.  Sundressed are on the cusp of making their next step even bigger, and as long as they maintain the artistic integrity they sing about so passionately, their reach can only grow.
