Young Fox Sky Beats Gold

Young Fox

Sky Beats Gold

Spartan Records

Rating: 3.5/5

It’s been two long years since Young Fox released their first EP, Predecessors, now the Pittsburgh-based indie rockers will finally be releasing their debut album, Sky Beats Gold, tomorrow, March 10th 2017, via Spartan Records. Young Fox claim to have adopted a more streamlined approach for their debut full length, if this is the case the it’s one that seems to have paid off, as the production on this album is flawless, without ever edging into being over produced. Sky Beats Gold boasts dark and driving drums and bass that lay the foundation for intricate guitar work, these aggressive instrumental elements combine seamlessly with soaring and confident vocal melodies to create what must be recognised as an accomplished debut full length.

From the first notes of lead single and opening track, Sometimes The Monsters Win, which given current world events is an extremely topical song title, the whole of Sky Beats Gold boasts precise drum beats, serious bass hooks and huge, yet understated, guitar riffs, this is a heavyweight release that leans to the darker side of indie, but one that also possesses a rock sensibility in it’s DNA. These elements are balanced perfectly to create the kind of sound that I can’t help but feel will almost inevitably lead to mainstream recognition. Whilst Sky Beats Gold tends to dwell on the darker side of human nature, it manages to come across as an uplifiting and positive album, one that has big soaring choruses that compliment the whole epic feel of the album perfectly.

Sky Beats Gold is a heavyweight in indie terms, an album that should appeal to fans of the likes of Elbow, Muse, White Lies and Interpol, it’s an introspective, serious and flawlessly produced album, one that I can see catapulting them to filling larger venues, that’s not to say that Sky Beats Gold is entirely to my tastes, but to give credit where it’s due, Young Fox have released a seriously accomplished debut that is anthemic from start to end. Sky Beats Gold will appeal to the casual listener, but it retains enough of an edge to avoid being dismissed as a purely commercial endeavour, whether you like it or not I suspect that Young Fox will be a band that you will be hearing a lot more of over the coming years.

Sky Beats Gold is available for download and on ltd edition vinyl, on Monster, Wolves and Desert variants, here

Radio Transmission Failure

Kenobi Records / Spartan Records

Rating: 3.5/5

San Diego space cadets Anakin have been with us since 2010 and their latest album, Radio Transmission Failure, follows on from 2012’s Random Accessed Memories and last years Celestial Frequency Shifter, they have established their heavy yet spacey sound on their first two albums, so what does their latest offering have in store?

With a name like Anakin and the fact that this is released on Kenobi Records I was expecting some unashamedly geeky rock, whilst there are elements of the likes of Weezer, Stereolab and Nerf Herder in their sound this is a different beast. Opening track Ultrasonic is a slow heavy fuzz drenched and spacey number, and that is pretty much the template for the rest of album. The heavy guitar sound is lightened by the quirky keyboards and breathed vocals that gives Radio Transmission Failure an extremely poppy sensibility, one that belies the heavy overdriven guitars and drums that are an ever present feature of the album.

Radio Transmission Failure is a progression from their first two albums, whilst all the same elements are present that were a hallmark of their previous albums, this is a more refined and balanced release than it’s predecessors, it carries a pop sensibility that makes it more accessible but, and there is a fairly big but, this is a somewhat one dimensional album. There are only mild variations in the songs and I can’t help feeling that some more variety is needed, yes this is a more polished version of the style they perfected on their previous albums and EP’s, but unless they begin to inject some variation into their material they’re in danger of becoming something of a one trick pony. In Star Wars terms this is by no means a Phantom Menace of an album, it’s more of a Return Of The Jedi, hopefully they can avoid the prequels and skip straight to the Force Awakens for their next album.

Ourlives HH

Higher Hopes

Spartan Records

Rating: 3/5

Iceland’s Ourlives relased Higher Hopes at the tail end of last month, this is the first material they’ve released since their critically acclaimed debut album, Den Of Lions, that was released in 2014. Higher Hopes is a collection of nine rarities that will tide fans over until the band’s next release of new material, it is a compilation of nine b-sides, studio outtakes and unreleased songs that have been culled from their back catalogue, including material dating back to their 2009 Icelandic debut.

Higher Hopes opens with the title track, this is a gentle acoustic number, the second number starts in the same vein but thankfully builds up the tempo as the song progresses, but not too much as this a distinctly mellow album, that isn’t a criticism, every now and again we all need something for those times when we’re winding down. I’ve read articles where comparisons have been made between Ourlives and the brit pop bands of the nineties, personally I think that this is doing them a disservice as I found Brit Pop to be largely formulaic and derivative, that is not an accusation that can be made of Ourlives. Higher Hopes is an collection of rarities and forgotten songs that possesses more than a modicum of charm and originality.

Iceland has a history of producing unique musical acts, whether its the experimentalism of Bjork, or the art rock of Sigur Ros, and I think that Ourlives carry on in that fine tradition of making unique music. Whilst this is a markedly less frenetic, and much more melancholy, offering than the kind of album I would usually choose to listen to. Higher Hopes is an album that is not without it’s charm, when the mood takes me this will be something that I’ll be revisiting from time to time.

Ourlives will release new material on the Black River EP that is due for release this Autumn.

Higher Hopes can be ordered from Spartan Records here

Square Peg Round Hole

Spartan Records

Rating: 2.5/5

Juniper is the new full length from experimental instrumental trio Square Peg Round Hole. I have no idea where to start with this, the drumming ranges from sparse to frantic, this underpins the obscure instrumentals that overlay the beat. This isn’t just a band that haven’t found a singer, their compositions wouldn’t work with vocals, they include obvious instruments, but mainly there are keyboards, vibraphones and even the inclusion of found or discarded objects they have utilised to broaden the depth of their soundscapes.

Juniper is a certainly a bold artistic statement, this is not an album that has been made with any commercial intent, it is the sound of a band making the music they want to make with no compromises. The album has been superbly mixed by Copeland‘s Bryan Laurenson, he balances the multiple sounds and instruments to make a unique soundscape, it is one that shifts randomly between the discordant and frantic to the intimate and comforting. This is an album that stand firmly on it’s own and defies being pigeonholed or attached to any recognisable genre, they are vey much a square peg in a round hole.

Square Peg Round Hole is a well chosen band name as they are a truly unique beast, part sparse post punk beats, part demented lullaby, part obscure chemical induced relaxation and part demented movie soundtrack. It’s not often I hear a band where I have no frame of reference but Square Peg Round Hole are exactly that. There is no one else doing anything like this, and a spirit of independence is always something to be admired. I can’t imagine when I’m going to listen to this again, but there’s a fair bet I will when the mood takes me, as we all need something a bit strange and experimental in our lives from time to time.

Juniper can be ordered, and streamed, here
