Antillectual are one of the torchbearer bands for political punk in Europe. Their most recent effort Engage! is only a couple of weeks old, and is their sixth album already. One of the good things about Engage! is that it’s packed with fresh ideas and songs about hot issues, thus avoiding a pitfall of the genre: hitting the same nail over and over again. We had a talk with the Dutch punk rockers on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Brakrock ecofest. There really couldn’t have been a more fitting moment for a chat about Engage! and the songs on it, about European politics and about taking the stage at Punk Rock Holiday for a second time.
Stumble And Stand
As We Go are a five piece punk band who hail from the city of Cologne in Germany, Stumble And Stand is their debut full length and it follows on from their debut DIY EP, Alright For Now that was unleashed in 2014. With their DIY credentials and the fact that Stumble And Stand was recorded with renowned producer Uwe Sabirowsky, responsible for production on Beatsteaks, Boysetsfire and The Donots records, then this is an album that has the potential to be something to look forward to.
From the first track, All Things, it is clear that this is a full tilt punk rock album with a hefty influence from other side of the Atlantic. The subject matter isn’t going to raise any eyebrows, loss, unity and of course beer, are all covered across Stumble And Stand‘s eleven tracks and 35 minutes. The pace doesn’t relent, the guitar hooks are all strong and the production is perfection, no surprises there given the quality of the man at helms pedigree, and whilst it’s hard to pick a favourite from this album I think that Waking Up My Friend stands slightly above the other ten cuts on this impressive debut, but only slightly.
There is a clear influence from Hot Water Music but is that a bad thing, this is eleven tracks of melodic punk rock with anthemic fist pumping choruses that doesn’t disappoint on any level. Stumble And Stand isn’t the most original album I’ve heard this year, but it’s such an energising and consistent album that I find myself not caring in the slightest. If I had a major criticism of this album it would the cover art, I find it slightly misleading as the cartoonish style hints at something a lot poppier than the hard edged melodic punk that comprises Stumble And Stand. Had I not been reviewing Stumble And Stand I might well have passed this album over, hopefully I can stop a few others making that mistake as this is a seriously impressive and uncompromising slab of punk rock.

Antillectual, who are from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, are a trio that play a socially conscious and energetic blend of punk music, they are a band that wear their influences proudly on their collective sleeves. By creating their own unique blend of stolen riffs and borrowed song titles, Antillectual have created an album that is a hybrid of the finer elements of the last few decades of punk rock. The opening number, Priest Without A Religion, starts with an 80s rock feel, gentle guitars and swirling keyboards abound, but thankfully this is a red herring as at about the minute mark the punk assault kicks in, and from that point forward this is a unrelenting blast of punk energy and melodic hardcore.
What’s clear before you’ve even played a single track is that there is a keen sense of humour present alongside the politically sussed lyrics, titles such as, Europe, This Is Your Final Countown, Appetite For Construction and Obsessive Cosmetic Disorder show an awareness of the past that Antillectual have recycled for the own aims. This is also applicable to their music as well, as their are distinct similarities to the punk bands that came before them. Vocally they are channelling Bad Religion, musically there are two many influences to number, but this is an amalgamation that definately evokes the spirits of previous punk rock glories. That’s not to say that this album is in anyway copying other bands, it is heavy influenced by American punk bands but it has a character all of it’s of its own
Antillectual are carrying the torch for European punk rock far beyond the borders and boundaries of their own country. They aren’t shy about acknowledging their influences, whilst this doesn’t quite hit the heights of the bands that informed their sound, it is a damn fine slab of American style punk rock that is played with a European twist. In addition to their obvious influences they’ve even recruited a few members of some of those bands to make an appearance on Engage! Strike Anywhere‘s Thomas Barnett and BoySetsFire‘s Nathan Gray both make welcome guest appearances on this album. If you have a love of the likes of Bad Religion, Against Me! and Anti-Flag then you will want to investigate Engage!
Engage! is being released worldwide on July 29th through Bird Attack Records (US), Redfield Records (Europe), Waterslide Records (Asia) and Fusa Records (South America).

The song is titled “Racist Rash” and the disc will be titled Engage, which is set to drop on June 29, 2016 in Europe through Redfield Records, in Asia through Waterslide Records, and in South America through Fusa Records. The disc follows their 2013 LP, Perspectives And Objectives, available now on A-F Records. The band comments on the video:
“The song deals with the racism that is still omnipresent in our culture, sports, traditions, policies, etc. A big obstacle in overcoming this is the inability of people to accept that a statement or action without a racist intention can nonetheless have a racist implication. The bullheaded idea that one can perfectly judge a situation one is part of oneself, is another big obstacle. Racism is not an opinion or an ideology, it’s a crime to be convicted or a disease to be cured at best. Don’t let patients diagnose their own case.”
