Pentimento return with their latest full length instalment, I, No Longer. The Buffalo, New York four-piece has undergone a noticeable transition since their earliest years. Their ongoing momentum has brought them from a place of slightly brash, more predictable songwriting to their current destination, which leans most heavily on channelling a smoother take on their 90’s influenced emo roots. Favouring vocal cleanness over roughness, Pentimento are working at their most melodic, which is good news for fans of their previous EP, Inside The Sea.
While previous efforts struck listeners with their most intense melodies at the easiest moments, I, No Longer opens on one of the album’s most reserved notes. Vocalist Jeramiah Pauly sings softly without a hint of grain in his angsty style, not unlike that of a more mature Light Years. With long, drawn out vocal notes placed against tepid shore crashing sonic waves, “Small Talk For Strangers” finds balance between stringy guitar and full bodied riffs. Culminating in a slow burning chorus of backing vocals, Pentimento bridges the track with follow up “My Solution Is In The Lake.” There’s somewhat of a Tigers Jaw meets Tales Don’t Tell Themselves era Funeral For A Friend loosely lurking somewhere in Pauly’s polished performance. In other words, they’ve since hung up their dash of hardcore in favour of pursuing bigger, song spanning harmonies.
I, No Longer is a remarkably calm album for Pentimento. Tracks like “Slow But Sure” and “Sink Or Swim” layer on vocals and guitars in melodic sequence, building up to reasonably catchy choruses that blend the altrock elements of Taking Back Sunday with the jangly structures characteristic of Hostage Calm and Transit. The ease of play mirrors post-punk stalwarts Brand New during minimal, melancholy moments. For instance “No Matter What” and “Getaway” hover around such a place although they never really reach the dark depths implicit in that comparison. The band feels very confident in their delivery, although at times they feel as if they’re taking a safer route than with the debut that originally landed them on the map (which will come down to a matter of preference for listeners).
With I, No Longer Pentimento makes good on the promising change of direction first explored in Inside The Sea. The foundation makes for a natural extension in calm but relatively complex melody that quietly emerges across the twelve accompanying tunes. Pentimento initially exploded on the scene with quite the initial statement. While much of that initial fire has since evolved into something more subtle, the resulting craftsmanship remains top notch.

Philadelphia’s The Weaks have posted a video for Kick It, a track taken from their debut full length Bad Year, released back in April via Lame-O Records. Rather than trying to explain, it’s probably easier if you just go and check out the video for yourself!

Pentimento has wasted little time following up their self-titled debut. The tight timeline and steady touring has evidently served the band well. While this is just a short collection, there is plenty to love here. Channeling the best of 90s and early 00’s emo, they have created a passionate gathering of songs, filled with excessive amounts of hooks and harmonies. The vinyl editions of this release are a must own, the music is matched with absolutely beautiful packaging. It is always refreshing to hear a young band who can so successfully outdo their own superb debut, single handedly showing up the majority of bands currently in the scene.
Working with enough modern flair to fit into the current scene, Pentimento draws on a variety of influences to write songs that actually stand out from the crowd. Occasionally there are hints of pop punk in the mix, most noticeably during the whoa ohs of Any Minute Now… Other times far reaching arena rock of the 90s comes to mind, but in a way that emphasizes the good qualities and stops short of becoming corny.
Inside the Sea exudes a confidence that wasn’t yet present on their debut. While that was indeed a great album, they have expanded their sound this time around and show a subtle maturation. Growth is evident through the presence of passion that gives life to the songs. It is difficult to believe that Pentimento is a relatively new band. Instead of just being great songs to listen to, they have crafted great songs to sing along to, which is an important distinction. The irony of the introspective lyrics being tailor made for group sing alongs just adds to the likeability of the album. The emotion comes to a head in closing track It’s Okay, with the line “fast forward a couple months. I hate myself, I hate my friends… so fucking what?” and slowly chronicles the stages of post breakup heartache. The lyrics reflect the raw emotions of youth and the nostalgia that follows as one matures.
There was a time when Taking Back Sunday took listeners by surprise with Tell All Your Friends, a passionate call and response plea to the world. Adam Lazzara has repeatedly denounced this album, but fans that fell in love with the band then still proudly hold this as their watermark. There is something equally engaging here, exposed emotions coupled with the raw music (in stark contrast to their polished debut) that elevates this release above the crowd. Pentimento have crafted four songs that fulfill the promise that TBS never managed to live up to; passionate emo laced rock music, with soaring melodies, minimal use of the scream/sing dynamic and heart felt lyrics.

Buffalo punk act Pentimento has announced that they will be releasing a rand new EP. The EP will be titled Inside The Sea and is due out October 22, 2013 via Paper + Plastick Records. The group offers a lengthy statement about the release:
“If I had to say something about the sound of the band at this point, or what people can expect from this EP – the only thing that comes to mind is that this music sounds urgent. It all happened seemingly at once, which is what makes this release different from the ones before it. There wasn’t a riff we’ve been kicking around for months and then decided to make a song out of it. There wasn’t a bunch of words in a notebook that seemed to make sense to use for something. It just happened. The songs sound like they needed to come out. We did not spend months on top of months mulling the parts over. We did not lock ourselves in a room until we felt like we were finished. We did not take our time recording them. We decided it was time to do something, and then we did it. The product of all this is an EP representing a very particular and uncertain and most of all scary time period between the release of the full length, and where we’re at now as a band and as people. It’s very exciting to have the chance to support this EP on tour with Real Friends, Mixtapes and Forever Came Calling this Fall because now that the pressure we put on ourselves to record these songs is off, the next step is turning attentions to the voice in the four of us that screams to share what we’ve been doing with as many people as possible.”

It seems that New York-based Pentimento has resolved legal issues with Panic Records once blocking the physical release of their self titled full length, released last year. The album will see release in vinyl form on May 7, 2013 via Paper + Plastick with Black Numbers Records handling digital and CD versions. The band comments:
“The flood of support we received following the announcement to give the record away for free in November was nothing short of moving to all four of us, and I couldn’t even begin to imagine a way to explain how grateful we are and always will be. We are ecstatic to be able to finally get the record out on physical formats, to see it finally come to life. Even now, I can’t be sure that I’m explaining myself in a way that will accurately represent what it means to a band like us to have the opportunity to be a part of punk rock, and to have so many incredible people surrounding us to reinforce exactly why we push ourselves to do what we do, despite the adversity.”
