Harker

Harker

A Lifetime Apart

By

Rating: 3.5/5

Brighton, UK four piece Harker has hit their stride with their latest EP, A Lifetime Apart.  Marking the evolution of the band from frontman Mark Boniface’s personal solo project to a completely collaborative, full-band endeavor, Harker fulfills the promise of a semi-raspy vocalist singing against a backdrop of catchy, hook-laden pop-punk.  Fans of anything from Hot Water Music to Jimmy Eat World stand to make a pleasant surprise with the four awaiting songs.

Opener “23” provides a fairly simple example of the pseudo-anthemic style that Harker openly runs with.  A dual sense of wisdom and youth springs forth in Boniface’s mature yet optimistic exuberance.  Paired with the clean resonant riffs and distinct mid-tempo chord structures of their influences, the song subtly explores the social challenges of shifting from adolescence to early adulthood.  The concept of “stalling” in life is concisely communicated in the line “feeling comatose, but I can’t get any kind of sleep.”  “Certain To Spill” carries the same rough and tumble edge forward to the halfway mark, at which point the band undergoes a minor shift for the final two songs.  A faint Gaslight Anthem essence seeps into Boniface’s affective vocal articulation for the duration of “Sleepy Eyed” before transitioning into the passionate, sing-along choruses of “Nightmare Fuel” – the latter of which embodies an audible likeness to Dave Hause.

Harker demonstrate their worth in four quick songs sure to leave leave listeners hungry for more.  A Lifetime Apart sets a formidable punk-punk foundation from which to grow from, drawing upon a refreshing array of past and present influences that should turn the heads of punk fans from all walks of life.  Overall a promising introduction that sets up Harker as a punk rock force to watch out for.
