“This video is like a public service announcement about the dangers of live music. Like, a lot of people don’t realize it, but this shit is risky business. And I’m not talking about Tom Cruise movies. And, if I was talking about Tom Cruise movies, I’d be talking about Legend, cause that shit is THE BOMB. But, I’m not, so whatever. We shot this video at The Frequency in Madison Wisconsin, which is where we played our first show ever of all time! The show depicted in this video seems like it would be our last show ever of all time. It’s just a video, though, so chill. No Intruders or cops were harmed in the making, but several pizzas and a lot of booze got fucked up real bad.

All the actors and extras in the video are fans that responded to an Instagram casting call! Thanks everyone! It was directed by Bobby Makar with assistance from Chris Norman, and we’re stoked on it!
Cool!'”

I want to do out tiny little part to make sure Standing Rock is prepared for what comes next. Syracuse (Liverpool) NY, come and help out!”

Masked Intruder are a quartet of wanted felons that go by the names Intruder Blue, Intruder Green, Intruder Red and Intruder Yellow, their real identities are kept secret, presumably so they avoid apprehension by the authorities. Their self titled debut album was released by Red Scare Records, and later re-released by Fat Wreck Chords, their sophomore album was also released by Fat Mike’s label, they allegedly left the label after a string of mysterious thefts occurred. This is their first release for Pure Noise Records and if you liked their first two releases then you’ll love the Love And Other Crimes as it offers more of their trademark hard edged pop punk songs about their two passions in life, love and committing criminal acts.

Opening track Take What I Want is a little more rock oriented than their previous releases, think of a kleptomaniac poppy AC/DC and you’re there or thereabouts, First Star Tonight is back to their second love, after crime, it’s an adrenaline fuelled tale of unrequited love that returns to their Ramones influenced roots and they keep the theme going on Beyond A Shadow Of A Doubt, this is also a love song, only in this case it’s about being in love with someone who has a restraining order in place. Whilst the first three tracks fall a little short of the standards set on their first two albums Running From The Cops is a track that has the manic energy of their earlier releases and Still Always On My Mind shows their sensitive side, albeit a love song about memories of the love of their life recounted from a prison cell, this is one of their tracks that comes across like a 50’s rock n roll number played with a punk edge, this is easily my favourite track on Love And Other Crimes, and finally If Only closes the EP out in a frantic pop punk style.

I hope law enforcement never catch up with Masked Intruder as their manic pop punk is a joy, whilst this isn’t quite as strong as their first two albums it’s a damn fine EP and a worthy addition to anyones (criminal) record collection. Love And Other Crimes will be released from the state penitentiary on July 8th on Pure Noise Records.

You can order Love And Other Crimes for download from the usual sources, or it can be ordered on CD and vinyl, including a bewildering array of coloured vinyl and packages, here

Video: Masked Intruder – Beyond A Shadow Of A Doubt

Masked IntruderPop-punk band Masked Intruder has premiered a new music video from their Pure Noise Records debut.  The track is titled “Beyond A Shadow Of A Doubt.”  Blue Intruder comments on the song’s content:

“This video depicts a robbery, which you shouldn’t try at home. Mostly cause that wouldn’t make any sense… If you’re gonna try robbery, make sure you do it at someone else’s home. That’s really the first thing about robbery. Also, this video has a lot of references and nods and stuff like that. So, if you’re a nerd, you should like it. So, I guess if you’re a nerd who likes robbery, you should be pretty stoked. Also, the song is cool. It’s about a girl.”

The band plans to release a new EP entitled Love And Other Crimes on July 8, 2016.  Watch the video below.

Masked Intruder Details New EP; Streams First Song

Masked IntruderPop-punk band Masked Intruder has detailed plans for their Pure Noise Records debut.  The band plans to release a new EP entitled Love And Other Crimes on July 8, 2016.  Coinciding with the announcement, the band has premiered the track “Take What I Want.”  Blue comments:
“We’re really stoked on this EP! We recorded it with Roger Lima, who produced it along with Mike Kennerty. We had an awesome time working on it, and I think that really comes through in the final product. It was mixed and mastered by Stephen Egerton, and he killed it. We basically couldn’t be happier with how everything came out, including the awesome cover art by Danielle Otrakji. It’s a pretty dynamic record, especially for a 6 song EP. Each song really has it’s own feel, which we hope will appeal to the ladies, and make them want to make out with us. The first track/single is called “Take What I Want” and it’s about stealing, which is cool. Other than that, I think the record pretty much speaks for itself. Cool!”

Masked Intruder Join Forces With Pure Noise Records

Masked IntruderPop-punk band Masked Intruder has joined forces with Pure Noise Records.  Blue comments on the speculation on their departure from Fat Wreck Chords:

“We’re stoked to be working with Pure Noise!! Jake over there is a real cool dude, and we got some cool shit planned, if you know what I mean. Which, you probably don’t, cause we haven’t told you yet.

We would like to take this opportunity to say that any alleged rumors of us being kicked off Fat cause we “allegedly stole” a “bunch of shit” from the “eccentric proprietors of the historic label” are completely and totally unsubstantiated and stupid. We will always love Fat and everyone there, from a distance consistent with the court’s alleged rulings.

Maybe we made the move cause we appreciate the value of unexpected partnerships, on account of our time spent in prison. Or, cause we appreciate the value of staying on the move, on account of our time spent trying to be out of prison. Or maybe cause we figured Pure Noise could use more down picking, overall. Or maybe cause they have a young audience, and young people are much easier to rip off.”
The band plans to release  release a new EP in July 2016 around their summer run on the Vans Warped Tour.

Masked Intruder’s second full length is more than welcome. On their debut the group introduced listeners to their bubblegum pop punk criminal themed love songs. They were a refreshing injection of fun into the oft over serious punk scene. Plus, they managed to do it with a relatively G rated recording (ok, ok, I get dirty looks from my wife when my 5 year old loudly sings I got a knife, motherfucker…). But there is a definite cartoon like sheen on their music. They should appeal to 80s kids who grew up in the heyday of cartoons. The sole problem with their debut is that it blew by too fast. They came out of nowhere and assaulted unsuspecting listeners with their music, then took off before anyone could regain their bearings. Now they return with M.I., which offers listeners a second half to a great hour long album. Think of this as Pop Punk Pt. 2.

The masked hoodlums kick off their second 13 song collection with I Fought the Law, which follows a police siren with an upbeat song about… fighting the law. They twist the message of the classic song with the same name with their humorous tendencies. Instead of the law simply winning, they discuss police brutality when they let everyone know the law beat the shit out of [them]. The sappy love song The Most Beautiful Girl takes on a more serious tone, leaving the criminal element behind as they profess their love in a surprisingly serious power pop song. M.I. brings to mind the same influences that their debut touched on (Screeching Weasel, early Green Day), but it also expands their reach a little, with elements of early Weezer popping up from time to time (as on Crime Spree). That may be part of the reason that they are so appealing. Masked Intruder are touching on the beloved music from bands who have moved on into other musical areas. They add in dashes of 1960s pop, with harmonies straight out of a sock hop. Songs tackle important topics like being in prison, being in love and being in love while in prison. Somehow they manage to avoid both creepiness and any mention of dropping soap in the prison shower. The kick off Stars with a soft melody before kicking into high gear as they profess their love forever together until the stars burn out. It is a testament to the quality of the band that they manage to come across as sweet instead of ridiculous with their heartfelt lyrics, especially since they are supposedly offered by criminals. You can easily imagine Johnny Depp and friends singing Almost Like We’re Already in Love in a prison cell, snapping fingers with a chorus of guys in uniform providing some oh ohs, daydreaming about some clean cut girl on the outside. Ultra cheesy and great because of it. They kick things up a few notches for Don’t Run Away, reaching for the pop punk style of their peers Teenage Bottlerocket. New comers will know if they are going to like the group within the first couple of songs. This isn’t a deep concept album that grows over time. Chances are you will love these guys, but if you don’t you’ll probably still find something to like.

Masked Intruder have managed to live up to the expectations created by their fantastic debut full length. M.I. is full of fun love songs, perfect harmonies and enjoyable power pop. Let’s hope none of these guys ever get sent off to solitary, this music is just too great to lose.

Elway Reveals New Song + Tour Dates

ElwayThe four-piece indie rock band from Fort Collins, Elway, have premiered the first new song, “Ariel” from their forthcoming album, Leavetaking. The new album is set to release digitally on June 25th and physical CD/LP on July 2nd from Red Scare. A stream of “Ariel” can be found on AVclub.com and pre-orders for the new album can be found on interpunk.com.

Guitar/vocalist Tim Browne had this to say about Ariel: ” I was eyebrows deep in teenage post-breakup malaise at the age of 25 and I wanted to try my hand at waxing Americana…so I wrote this straightforward four-chorder that’s way fun to play and sing, with a repetitive hook that sort of drives it all home. Title is a reference to my girl Sylvia Plath’s horse. Respect.”

In support of their new album, Elway have announced tour dates for July and August. The band will be touring with label mates Masked Intruder and Sam Russo on the “Red Scare Across America Tour”. The tour kicks off in Chicago on July 8th and will wrap up in Milwaukee on August 17th.

Over the past few years, secret identity bands have popped up more and more frequently.  There was the Green Day side project The Network, then the massive group The Sound of Animals Fighting and don’t forget The United Nations. Those are just three that I could think of off the top of my head (would The Locust count as one? I’m not sure) and there’s tons more out there. The latest of which isMasked Intruder – a band who was once drunkenly described to me as “Teenage Bottlerocket with Mikey Erg.”

And quite frankly, that’s a damn good description.

Masked Intruder is a straight forward pop-punk act unlike most in recent memory. They’re unabashedly leaning on the pop-tendencies, but with a sped up-power punch that just gets you excited. They’re a modern day Chixdiggit! with a dash of The Queers in there as well; and yes – it’s Mikey Erg with Teenage Bottlerocket tendencies too. Think, if you will – Beach Boys pop meet The Ramones punk. All of it adds up and it makes perfect sense that Fat Wreck just scooped them up for their follow-up.

Alas, we’re not here to discuss their follow-up but instead their self-titled debut and what a flurry of activity it is. Masked Intruder is twelve songs of pure pop-punk love songs (with a quick thirty second introduction thrown in as well).

Like any good pop-punk love song, these are over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek anthems bringing the love songs to an almost stalkerish quality. 25 to Life, Breakin’ and How Do I Get To You all have that signature love-struck tales but none compares to the album highlight of Heart Shaped Guitar. Featuring guest vocals from Mixtapes’ Maura Weaver, the song’s duelling vocals tell the story of singing love songs on Maura’s front yard at 3AM and is by far the best pop-punk song of the year.

There are moments when Blue’s vocals could be a tad too high pitch for some, but for any pop-punk aficionado, Masked Intruder is a perfect addition to their collection. For unrelentingly up-beat pop-punk, you need look no further than this. Plus, where else would you get a line like “Well, I guess I must be a pretty sorry sight to see. I get turned down more than the beds at a Super 8” followed by a song about robbing a guy a knife-point. Nowhere, that’s where.

Toby – where do you continually find bands like these?
