Los Angeles pop-punks Margate have gradually built their reputation around perseverance and hard work.  During their ten year career they haven’t been the highest profile band to come out of the area, but furthered their reputation when they jumped on board with Cyber Tracks a few years back.  Having started as a quieter sounding band in their early days (comparisons to Motion City Soundtrack and American Steel), the band has since followed the melodic punk rock path to their place alongside labelmates Ten Foot Pole and Implants.  Their latest full length, Beards In Paradise, continues that trend with ten tracks that fly by in just over twenty minutes.

Margate rolls out a safe assortment of mid to fast paced pop-punk with a smart blend of humour in keeping up momentum.  “Want It All” feels largely inspired by Lagwagon in its quick delivery and nasally vocals, whereas “From The Start’s” smoother, backing “ahhhhs” take a more melodic approach in the vein of various EpiFat staples.  During times like “I’m Your Density,” quick wit and blistering hooks make for forty second of memorable skate-punk circa NOFX or No Use For A Name.  “Rock Out With Your Clock Out” gets the formula just right by stringing along the playful chorus, “It’s an hour and half till freedom, too bad it feels like three,” infusing more tasteful humour with a great tempo and long lasting three-part harmonies.  Likewise, “Crowd Goes Mild”’s tongue in cheek attitude taps into the woes of an unpromoted tour stop that leaves a crowd void of fans and Margate having to “dig down deep” when the floor suddenly gets vacant (this would be amazing to listen to under those circumstances).  These familiar moments never push the envelope, but are respectfully inspired by a now classic brand with love and care.

But the results aren’t always home runs.  For instance, “Keep Dancin” feels much more like a swing and a miss.  Feeding on a little old school Ramonesy guitar simplicity with a bit of a retro vibe, the tune just doesn’t launch as readily as it should.  The same can be said about title track “Beards in Paradise,” which finds Margate trying their hand at a little pop-punk infused ska.  Instead of switching things up, the tale of chill’n lazy day L.A. lifestyle comes across gimmicky and flat (the halfhearted upstroke doesn’t really fit Margate).  However, straying from the path pays off the most is with “Never Know,” which channels the likeable essence of a Joey Cape acoustic track as a pleasing contrast to the bulk of Beards In Paradise’s rapid tempo.

Margate definitely has one foot in at least a few worlds, and for the most part, it works.  A few missteps aside, Beards in Paradise is a solid dose of straight up melodic pop-punk.  Even if Margate comes across a little paint-by-numbers, the good far outweighs the bland.

I love it when bands combine influences I would never consider placing together.  It completely catches me off guard, and makes for a captivating and exciting first listen.  I wasn’t expecting this when I first popped in Margate’s sophmore effort, On The Other Side.  The album’s cover features a colourful, starlit night sky at the break of dawn, easily hinting at something on the power-pop or emo spectrum.  But to modify an age-old saying, you can’t judge an album by its art…

When the first track, “In My Life,” started up, something felt out of place – in a good way.  Sure, the melodies were upbeat and poppy as expected, but they manage to feel fresh but familiar.  I couldn’t quite put my finger on it right out of the gate, but instrumentally there was a hint of pop-punk – in the vein of Motion City Soundtrack – but it was faint and meshed together with something else familiar, so I kept listening to satisfy my peaked curiosity.  The following track, “Time & Time Again,” started up slow, contrasting nicely with the previous track’s mid-tempo pace.  That’s when the other influence hit me: Fat Wrech Chords era American Steel.  Vocalist Alex somehow channels the raw sincerity of American Steel’s Rory Henderson, with the harmless pop-sensibilities of Motion City Soundtrack’s Justin Pierre.  It’s an odd pairing of influences, but feels completely natural.

Generally, the notability of their influences is tied to each track’s tempo.  The slower the tempo, the more like American Steel Margate sounds.  The quicker and more upbeat the melodies, the more likely they are to sound like Motion City Soundtrack.  For example, “It Is What It Is” and “On My Side” slow to a comparative crawl, featuring overly pronounced and elongated words in the vein of American Steel.   Meanwhile, catchy, pop-punk hooks propel faster tracks, like “Saved It,” forward in MCS fashion.

The duel influences also shape Margate’s lyrical direction.  The band bounces back and forth between dark, hopeless themes, and sunny, inconsequential pop anthems.  Tracks like “It Is What It Is” use dark imagery to describe personal lows, featuring references to “pain and sorrow” when describing life’s “ups and downs.”  But others like “Believe In Steve” bounce along jovially, singing about care-free, well natured characters like “Steve.”  Based on the variety of topics covered throughout On The Other Side, the band is trying to comment on the ebb and flow of life, or just dabbling in a range of influences.  Either way, the variations are welcome, and provide a nice spectrum of expressivity.

Margate have somehow bridged two typically opposed schools of punk; one dark, serious, and passionate, and the other carefree and inconsequential.  The songs contain just enough charm to avoid continual comparison to their influences, and the album’s reoccurring ups and downs overcome any potential issues of flow or pacing.  Recommended for fans across the punk spectrum.

Margate Sign With Cyber Tracks

Margate has gained the distinction of first official signing by aspiring record label Cyber Tracks.  The label was started by NOFX guitarist Aaron Abeyta (aka El Hefe) and his wife Jennifer Abeyta.  El Hefe explains the motivation behind their first signing:

“We were just looking for bands to record and produce when we came across Margate and realized how many amazing and talented unsigned artists are out there. They are incredible as a band and as individuals and really motivated us to start something more than just a production company,”

The label describes their relationship with bands as a “cooperative venture” with the promise “to empower bands by allowing them to share control, revenue, and decision-making equally with the label.”  Cyber Tracks is currently aiming to release new material from Margate in Spring 2012.
