Luther - Lets get You Somewhere Else

Let's Get You Somewhere

Chunksaah Records

Rating: 3.5/5

Want to get the attention of a room full of late twenty-something punks?  Name drop some Chris McCaughan (Lawrence Arms) or related acts and the room will fall silent.  That’s exactly what I’m doing for anyone in my demographic reading these words.

So now that I have my peers’ attention, allow me to introduce you to the new kid on the block, Luther.  He actually moved in a few years back, but he hasn’t really left the safety of his backyard until lately.  But now he’s venturing out into the cul-de-sac with the training wheels off and making friends with just about everyone he meets thanks to his playful wit and relatable charm.

Hailing from Philadelphia, this young pop-punk quartet has been quick to grow their fan base with the advent of their sophomore full length, Let’s Get You Somewhere Else.  Easy to break into and even easier on the way down, the band’s hook laden take on clean pop-rock just feels right.  Opener “The Concrete Sound” tunefully seeps to the fore with the one-two punch of vaguely grainy, peppy vocals and smoothly executed guitar hooks.  Minor differences in tempo afford personality between tracks like the spirited “Heavy Money” and mounting choral strength of “The Glory Bees.”  It all comes together in album high point “A Quiet Stretch Of Weather.”  “I’m not catering to anyone anymore, is it a midlife crisis, I hope I don’t die when I’m forty,” becomes the vocal hook that propels the song well into memory.

The worst that can be said about Luther is that they are a mix of familiar and safe.  They’re plenty good in the moment, but Let’s Get You Somewhere Else sometimes lets its pop side hold the reigns a little too loose.  For instance, “Rattlesnake” and “Sunset, Sugar” fade into the backdrop against more memorable offerings like “An American Gothic.”  Based on their musicianship though, another album or two and these developing buds should blossom into sonic blossoms.

It should be noted that in many respects, Let’s Get You Somewhere Else is your younger brother’s quintessential teenage pop-punk album.  But it’s the type you know you should look down on but end up completely committing yourself to and singing along with while it’s playing (If “The Second Star” doesn’t hook you, you have no soul).  Aside from a few forgivable growing pains already fading with time, Luther knows how to earn smiles from an audience using only dirt simple pop-rock.  No parlor tricks here, just timeless musicianship and catchy tunes.
