Worcester, UK based punk rock quartet Fights And Fires are heading in to the Summer of 2017 with their latest album, Live Life Like A Tourist, that is due for release on July 14th through Lockjaw RecordsLive Life Like A Tourist features eight tracks of melodic hardcore infused gruff punk rock that is inspired by the members of Fights And Fires finding happiness in their personal lives, rekindling a love for life and a passion for their music. As such this is optimistic release that carries an underlying message of positivity that runs throughout all eight tracks on the record, a message that is underpinned by one simple message, that you’re not on your own.

The bass rumble that opens Live Life Like A Tourist leads into the full blooded melodic hardcore of Reggae,  this intense slab of brutal punk rock lays down the template for much of the album, this is eight tracks of pummelling guitar riffs with gruff punk vocals with a dense and claustrophobic feel, but they re no one trick pony and there are notable moments that stop Live Life Like A Tourist being a one trick pony. Tracks like Awkward head into straight forward hardcore territory with a more brutal approach than much of the album, whereas Camping, and especially Ouija Board, bring comparatively mellow moments, although mellow for Fights And Fires is still very much an intense and noisy affair.

Fights And Fires are very much born of the harder edged end of the melodic hardcore scene, with the exception of Ouija Board this is a raw heavy and intense album that is influenced by the original spirit of hardcore. The raw vocal delivery and intense delivery ensure that Live Life Like A Tourist picks up exactly where their 2013 sophomore album, We Could All Be Dead Tomorrow, left off and indicates that Fights and Fires still live up to their moniker after all almost ten years together.

The Burnt Tapes are a London based quartet who originated in the sunnier climes of Athens in 2013, they moved to damper environment of the UK back in 2013 to continue their studies, and to avoid military conscription, and they now appear to have settled in the UK’s capital city. The Burnt Tapes have now released their five track Alterations EP via Lockjaw Records, Umlaut Records for the vinyl release, and Cannonball Records. The Alterations EP follows on from their 2016 releases, the Besides EP and a split single with Sketchy, and it can only cement their place in the UK punk scene, as for me this is their finest release to date.

The EP kicks off with the gruff punk charms of the title track and it sets a ridiculously high standard with it’s raw intensity, the lead single from the Alterations EP, Oh Marie, follows in it’s wake and brings things down a notch whilst maintaining the standards set by the title track. The wonderfully titled Wayne Regretzky carries on in the raw yet melodic footsteps of the preceding tracks whilst Ghosts brings the most manic moment on the EP, but the best is saved is saved for last. Things Get Weird closes the Alterations EP with a anthemic and deeply personal howl that’s accompanied by a dark and infectious riff that recalls the Alkaline Trio in their heyday, and it marks the perfect ending to an impressive and all too short EP by The Burnt Tapes.

The Burnt Tapes have delivered an almost flawless five track EP of muscular gruff punk that will appeal to fans of Nothington, Hot Water Music and Off With Their Heads, and it’s a release that, if there’s any justice, should see their already dedicated fanbase growing. Alterations blends punk rock and post hardcore with their own raw style and the result is an impressive EP that will be amongst the highlights of 2017 come the end of the year. If you’re unfamiliar with The Burnt Tapes then the release of Alterations EP marks the perfect moment to introduce yourself to their raw melodic punk rock charms, you can thank me later.

The Alterations EP can be ordered and streamed via Bandcamp here

Guildford, UK based melodic hardcore quintet Darko have unleashed their latest release, Bonsai Mammoth, via Bird Attack Records (US),Lockjaw Records (UK), Torch of Hope Records (JP) and Giljotina Records (SI). Despite Darko‘s longevity this is their debut full length and it follows on from the steady stream of EP’s and singles that have littered their history. The album was released yesterday, the 3rd February 2017, and is now available to purchase on vinyl and CD, and Bonsai Mammoth can also be streamed and ordered digitally.

Bonsai Mammoth starts with some light, almost jazz, chords, this worrying start is thankfully short lived, at the 25 second mark the album jump starts with the frantic hardcore infused skate punk of the opening track, Life Forms. Bonsai Mammoth continues in this vein, with the exception of the brief mellow strains of The Chernobyl Effect, a track that acts as a brief mid point intermission to the relentless punk assault. The pace and intensity contained on Bonsai Mammoth is unrelenting, but the style in which it is delivered remains varied, encompassing hardcore, melodic hardcore and skate punk, along with a few technical math rock flourishes that add a technical element to their delivery.

This is the sound of a band that is experiencing something of a renaissance in their sound, Darko have been with us for a while now, their debut EP was released back in 2010, and Bonsai Mammoth sounds tighter and more focused and intense than anything Darko have previously released. This is a somewhat relentless release, with the sole exception of the brief instrumental that acts as a mid distance marker, that is a full on hardcore assault from start to end, one that sits at the extreme end of the melodic hardcore spectrum. As Darko approach the milestone of a decade together Bonsai Mammoth is an indicator that this is a band that clearly has a lot more to offer.

Darko‘s Facebook presence can be found here, their Bandcamp is here and their website is here

Bonsai Mammoth can be streamed and purchased via Bird Attack Records here

Sea Of Trees

The technical wizards in Darko are at it again, delivering their fourth(ish) EP, Sea Of Trees, to their slowly amassing body of work.  Why the UK technical punk act avoids the full length format in favour of shorter, self contained bursts of calamity we may never know, but the presentation hardly seems to affect what awaits fans inside.  This time around, the band has opted to merge their metal-tinged riffs even closer to the realm of hardcore than in past outings, and while the change admittedly takes an adjustment period, there’s no question that Darko remains committed to pushing their limits.

Marking the biggest leap forward with Darko’s sound, the Sea Of Trees’ harder edge should translate into instant appeal with the Bridge Nine Records crowd.  Vocalist Dan Smith pushes himself harder and faster than ever before, belting with an unparalleled fury leading up to throat-ruining vocal climax of “Hanging Of A Memory” and “Seaward.”  Riffs crunch harshly and chug caustically amidst the blistering technical dynamism that originally put Darko on the map.  It’s uncharted territory for the band and comes and goes in short bursts much like primary influence Propagandhi.  As previously mentioned, the addition might take existing fans some time to warm up to (it’s a little less melodic than past works), but Darko treads new ground tactfully, exhibiting ingenuity alongside more well established hallmarks.

In particular, “Time Pieces & Lock Shaped Hearts” safely bridges the stylistic gap with one of their most iconic executions to date.  Harnessing speedy Heartsounds-style riff sequences and snapping 90’s punk drumming, guitarists Rob Piper and Chris Brown let their fingers fly for one of Sea Of Trees’ sharpest and most technical performances.  The A Wilhelm Scream parallels remain as strong as ever as Darko roars onwards, never hesitating to stop on a dime, switch direction to some crazy new tangent and back again (i.e. “Atlas To Atlantis”).  As always, even with so many concurrent vectors of sound, Darko manages to tie the chaos together with unrivaled expertise.

Sea Of Trees is a gutsy step forward for Darko.  The disc blurs competing genres more than ever, with buzzing vocals that more often trade crispness for primal intensity, and features striking guitar work that rips fiercely like a buzzsaw through bone with a surgeon’s precision.  Why Darko has yet to amalgamate their ambitions into a single defining full-length remains a mystery; in the mean time, ready yourself for yet another rock solid chapter in their ongoing anthology of killer EPs.
