Black Dots / Gentlemen Prefer Blood

Split

La Escalera Records

Rating: 4/5

I always love getting a split single as it provides the chance to hear what are usually two or more bands I haven’t previously been acquainted with, on this release we have Colorado’s Black Dots and California’s Gentlemen Prefer Blood who will be releasing a new four song split single, which is scheduled to be released tomorrow, the 28th April 2017 through La Escalera Records. The split features two new songs from each band, as well as what is becoming something of a tradition on split releases where both bands cover one of each other’s songs.

The Black Dots kick off this split EP with their original contribution, Bittersweet Though Mostly Bitter, this is a fine slab of upbeat punk rock that is followed by Diets For The Dying, their cover of the Gentlemen Prefer Blood track that continues the promising start made by the opening track. Gentlemen Prefer Blood immediately return the favour by covering the Black Dots track Everybody’s Got One, this side of the split has a harder more frantic edge and Gentlemen Prefer Blood provide the split’s finest moment with their new offering, Stretch Remedy.

Split singles are often a tale of two halves, and this latest offering from La Escalera Records is no exception, Black Dots provided a fine two tracks of rousing punk rock on the a-side, but for me it’s the flip side with Gentlemen Prefer Blood‘s contribution that has edged it for me on this release, but it must said that it was a close run thing. This is a damn fine introduction to two new, at least to me, bands, and as this release is also available on two stunning splatter vinyl variants you should already be clicking on the links below.

Somewhere Near The Bottom

Texan punk quartet Despero, that features former members of The Anchor, The Capitalist Kids, Air Tight Alibi, and Town Hall Devils, are gearing up to release their album Somewhere Near The Bottom tomorrow, the 24th of March, through La Escalera Records, the album will be available on CD and digital formats. Somewhere Near The Bottom is the band’s debut full length release, it originally appeared in a slightly shorter format via their Bandcamp last year, now the album is getting a full release via the esteemed La Escalera Records imprint.

The Bullets kicks off the album with a fine hardcore tinged blast of punk rock, this is followed by the darker themed Tiny Victories that has more of an anthemic quality and an insistent right hook of a riff. Somewhere Near The Bottom switches almost schizophrenically between their hard edged brutal side, and a more melodic counterpart, for me the latter part of their personality has the greater appeal, but both are delivered with equal passion and commitment across the album’s short sharp shock of nine tracks, that are delivered in a shade under twenty five minutes.

Despero are a band that refuse to be pigeonholed, whilst they are a full blooded punk band their delivery varies from straight up punk rock, through melodic hardcore and into full blooded hardcore. If you have any love for the likes of Strung Out, Good Riddance and Avail then this is a band you will want to investigate, as Somewhere Near The Bottom is a full blooded album of bare knuckle punk rock that will we be a welcome addition to your playlist.

Despero will be appearing at La Escalera Fest 6 in April 2017 in San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico alongside thirty other bands from the La Escalera Records stable. You can buy tickets, and get more information about La Escalera Fest 6 here

Old Fires, New Frontier

La Escalera Records
By

Rating: 4/5

Caskitt is are a Californian punk trio, they are led from the back from the back by drummer and lead vocalist Matt Caskitt, up front they have Steffen Long, guitar, and Jesse Hernandez, bass, both of whom chip into the vocal duties with harmonies and even taking over lead vocal duties from time to time. Old Fires, New Frontier is their sophomore release, it follows on from last years impressive debut, This Machine Kills Sadness. If their previous release killed sadness then Old Fires, New Frontier appears to be gleefully dancing on it’s grave.

Caskitt have lost none of their fire, the energetic compositions encompass punk, hardcore and even a tiny pinch of pop punk in what is a frantic and highly enjoyable album from start to end. Don’t be put off by the fact I’ve mentioned pop punk, I’m aware that term can send some people running to the hills, but it only applies to the accessible way in which the relentless speedy punk riffs are delivered. This isn’t just a relentless barrage, there are break downs and quieter moments amongst the frenetic earnest numbers, notably the brief instrumental Crimes that, unlike many interludes in albums, fits perfectly alongside the rest of the material.

To my ears there’s a distinct influence by Propagandhi and Against Me! on their sound and that is by no means a bad thing, they haven’t copied those bands but rather they’ve incorporated elements of those bands style into their armoury without being derivative. Old Fires, New Frontier is an album that’s firing on all cylinders and it seems that they have focused and refined their sound into an impressive album that doesn’t disappoint on any level.

Old Fires, New Frontier is released today and you can purchase or stream the album here

You can also purchase bundles, including coloured vinyl, that can be ordered from La Escalera Records here
