I’ll Never Be Okay, I’ll Never Be The Same is the second full length release from Philadelphia’s Goddamnit, although it must be said that it’s hard to think of this as a sophomore album as Goddamnit are made up of a quartet of veterans of the Philadelphia scene, including former members of One Year Lost, Super Hi Five, Reject, Williams Eve, Buglite and The Vote. I’ll Never Be Okay, I’ll Never Be The Same is being released today via the fiercely independent Pennsylvanian record label, Jump Start Records.

Opening track Fix Dis gives you an idea of what lies ahead, this is a heartfelt blue collar take on post hardcore, the delivery varies from downbeat tracks such as Letterbox, to the more strident tones of the lead single from the album, Steady Diet Of Sugar, through to the almost punky tones of Blue Jeans. This is an album that manages to avoid settling into it’s comfort zone, it contains all the elements that will doubtless appeal to established fans of post hardcore, but the more aggressive delivery provides a cross genre appeal that will surely bring others into their fold. There’s even a final twist with the mellow acoustic closer, The Message, that provides a fitting end to I’ll Never Be Okay, I’ll Never Be The Same, and shows another side to Goddamnit.

Goddamnit have delivered an album that contains all the hallmarks of post hardcore, but it’s delivered in a more down to earth style that for me gives it a different appeal, and separates it from the majority of bands ploughing the post hardcore furrow. To me I’ll Never Be Okay, I’ll Never Be The Same has more of a street punk attitude to it’s delivery, although this is a much more subtle affair despite containing some of the same hallmarks. Goddamnit have delivered an album that brings something different to the overcrowded post hardcore scene, and I’ll always be happy to see something new introduced to what has started to become a formulaic and predictable genre.

Dan Schafer sports one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary pop-punk.  His name is synonymous with a plethora of high profile three-chord acts, from dormant legacy bands The Methadones and The Riverdales to the presently active Dan Vapid And The Cheats and Noise By Numbers.  The former lands mostly in line with his peppier younger self (resonating from his Screeching Weasel years), while the former matches a darker, more levelled side (more in tune with The Methadones).  With such a prolific career, you can sure bet that Schafer has something cooking at any given time.

At this particular point, Schafer has been hard at work on the next addition to the Noise By Numbers body of work in the form of the six-song EP, High On Drama.  Schafer hasn’t typically been one for EP’s, so the format comes as somewhat of a modest surprise.  Give it a listen though, and the reasoning might come a little clearer.  High On Drama might be the farthest that Schafer has travelled from the safety of familiarity in quite some time.  Even with his unwavering trademark vocals holding strong, the encircling atmosphere feels… different.  Different in a more mature sense than a 45 year old Schafer typically lets on.

But there is at least one clue to forewarn fans.  For starters, the cover’s blue colouration concurrently hints at High On Drama’s uncharacteristically subdued nature.  Opening with the title track, guitarists Jeff Dean and Schafer shy away from the safety of quick landing pop-punk chords in favour of a far more methodical alt/rock vibe.  For instance, “Rudderless” and “Make Up Your Heart” feel far more relaxed in composition and tempo than with past works.  Choruses land heavier with weightier late-song bridges binding them together, and a somewhat unconventional chord selection defining the former.  Most telling though, is how a keen ear can zero in on some vague District Lines era Bob Mould flowing through the sentimental piece, “Town Of Hamburg.”

The only downside to High On Drama’s more mellow approach is the lack of energy responsible for building up previous outings.  In other words, there are some mildly depressing moments scattered about (Schafer’s trademark robotic tone doesn’t help in this regard).  It’s not a game breaker, but offers some modest room for improvement next time around (provided the band doesn’t disband after its brief run like many of Schafer’s projects).

As should be clear, listeners will find a lot less familiarity in High on Drama than one would expect from six-tracks featuring one of pop-punk’s most discernable voices.  Only “Southgate House” feeds the predictable melody meets-vocal-harmonies of past performances (which feels comfortingly like an alternative take of The Methadones’ b-side, “Take Me To Japan”).  Otherwise, High On Drama marks fairly new terrain for Noise By Numbers.  Long time fans will no doubt need to let to this one sink in before forming their opinion, but for a divergent effort in Schafer’s mostly homogenous discography, fans won’t want to overlook High On Drama.

European pop-punkers Astpai aren’t afraid to get their chords a little dirty.  The melodic four-piece understands that in order to rock out, you have to get gritty, and front man Zock’s coarse cries more than fit the bill. Fans of acts like North Lincoln, The Menzingers and Gatorface all stand to enthusiastically belt along to the various antis with brain-scrambled heads banging.  Combined with some unpredictable riffs that shred melody lightly through a blender, Astpai should be sitting buddy-buddy with fans of No Idea Records and the like in their fifth full length, Burden Calls.

Opening lightly with “Single Use,” the band’s initial, instrument-less statement “we were all born in boredom,” explodes feverously into an abrasive hard rock fixture that is anything but boring.  Zock’s strained shouts fluctuate somewhere between hardcore barks (early Against Me!) and forceful pop-punk commands (The Flatliners).  The final moments of “Out” get particularly wild as Zock morphs from assertive to demanding, mirrored in the outright crunching riffs giving way to an oddly fitting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exert.  “Death Everywhere” pulls back the reigns with a jumpy melody that sounds as if born of a more dynamic Banner Pilot.  The band further retreats from the remaining grit as they settle comfortably into the atmospheric showpiece, “After All.”  Suddenly transforming into a near-acoustic performance, Astpai gives way to an emotional downturn that finds Zock speaking quietly with the weight of a burden.  With so much to speak of so early on, the band’s appeal sets in quickly.

That being said, the back half of Burden Calls is comparatively a mixed bag.  Two thirty-second tracks, “Down By Love” and “Resignation,” feel under-developed; the former being a backdrop to another movie exert that doesn’t quite connect and latter serving as a hurried failure to launch.  Considering that follow-up “Careers” develops into one of the album’s most cleverly composed, anthemic takes on conventional chorus-verse formula, the need for these scattered micro-tracks is questionable.  Thankfully these are only minor moments that mostly disrupt flow and are easily forgotten by the time catchy sing-along closer “Emotion In The Way” concludes the disc.

Above all Astpai has written a coherent and musically thematic album.  Truthfully, the songs aren’t all that memorable on their own, but when taken together Burden Calls makes for a very distinct listen boasting plenty of breakout moments that compliment the Austrian act’s rough edge.  Easily recommendable for those enjoying the gruffer side of modern punk that still have a hankering to sing along to something light and catchy.
