Texan emo outfit Sine Cura‘s unusual name translates from Latin as ‘Without Care’, and that seems to be an appropriate moniker for a band who only released their debut single, Pressing Flowers, in the summer of 2016, now just two years after their formation the band have signed to Standby Records and have released their debut EP, I Am Growing, Honestly, that features five tracks of their unique blend of emo, indie and punk.
Drive eases you into the EP before it unexpectedly bursts into life with a hyperactive blast of indie infused punk that boasts an anthemic chorus, Growing Pains follows up with another burst of adrenalized emo. This duo of tracks made for a promising start to their sophomore EP, but as their roots are in the emo scene Headache Remedy brings the EP down to earth, but this midway point lull dupes you into a false sense of security as the track suddenly bursts into life for it’s final minute. Their impressive debut single, Pressing Flowers, carries the energy that has characterised the EP and the final number, La Luna, is another track that just can’t keep the restraints on and closes the EP in discordant style.
You can’t help get the feeling that Sine Cura can’t stop themselves from bringing energy into their sophomore release, even the tracks that promised an introspective moment of calm smash into life without warning. Sine Cura may have their roots deep in the emo scene but there are punk and energetic indie influences that come to the fore, and it’s these that make Sine Cura an intriguing outfit that brings a caffeinated rush to the sound, the result is an impressive debut for Standby Records that indicates that this is a band that have a bright future ahead of them.

Shortly after the disbandment of their critically acclaimed indie punk band Chumped in early 2016, lead singer Anika Pyle and drummer Dan Frelly started Katie Ellen as a fuzz pop two piece. Today the duo have released their debut full length, Cowgirl Blues, via Lauren Records, the new album is ten songs of twangy, pop forward indie punk with subtle country underpinnings, showcasing their knack for punchy, melodic songwriting familiar to fans of Chumped while exploring more dynamic and intimate arrangements. Katie Ellen will play a sold-out record release show in NYC tonight, with more tour dates to be announced soon.

Based between York and London, …And The Hangnails have not let distance come between the duo when it comes to writing, recording and relentless gigging. The band, made up of guitarist, Martyn Fillingham and drummer, Steven Reid have a very proactive mindset when it comes to writing and playing music, this mindset struck a chord with Yorkshire label, Young Thugs Records and has seen …And The Hangnails snapped up by the new label. Now the indie punk duo have released the band’s fourth full length release, DOG.
The album’s lead single, Don’t Waste My Time, kicks things off with ferocious fuzzy riff and pounding drum beat and you couldn’t ask for a more serious statement of intent to open an album, and there’s no time to draw breath before the infectious distorted stains of Junk kick in. Every single track on DOG carries an enthusiastic bouncy attitude and beat that simultaneously channels the snotty attitude of the best garage bands and the energy of punk, along with touches of indie style and a massive hit of adrenaline to produce a hybrid that never once takes it’s foot off the gas, all ten tracks are delivered at a frantic pace and with a relentless fuzz drenched charm that is impossible to resist.
DOG is as good as almost anything I’ve heard this year, from the opening charged fuzz of Don’t Waste My Time to the intense closing track Fear, this is a relentless energetic album that delivers a hedonistic and frantic half hour that borders on perfection, it carries influences from across the board that are too numerous to list, although if you think of The Libertines without the baggage and self indulgence you’d be half way there. It’s all delivered with an infectious adrenalin charged enthusiasm and if, like me, you weren’t acquainted with …And The Hangnails before then it’s not too late to correct that and DOG is the perfect album to introduce yourself to this duo

From their Massachusetts DIY punk origins, to their love of ’90s alternative and heartland singer songwriters, Born Without Bones are masters of blending their contrasting influences into a massively catchy, guitar-driven sound that is all their own. This skill is on full display on Young At The Bend as the band seamlessly mixes huge hooks with punk grit and indie quirks to make a record that ebbs and flows into many different styles and sounds, but is always compelling.
