This split EP features England’s Apologies I Have None and Australia’s Luca Brasi, it contains one new song and one rarity from each band. This is a limited edition cassette release, and if anyone wants one they are going to have to be quick. When I checked their bandcamp there were only six copies left for sale. Three of the Grey Day version, a grey cassette, and three of the clear skies variety, a blue cassette. I don’t understand the resurgence of cassettes myself but they seem to be popular so who am I to question it? Fortunately for those of us living in the modern age it is also available for download.
Apologies I Have None initially offer us Wraith, which will appear on their forthcoming album. This is an impressive track, and for me the strongest track on the EP. It’s a dark discordant number that displays hefty post punk and post hardcore influences, it reminded me of vintage Killing Joke in places, and that’s a hell of a compliment. Their second contribution is Red Wine, which is exclusive to this release. It‘s another good track that’s cut from the same cloth but it pales in comparison to Wraith which indicates to me that the new album is going to be something to look forward to.
Luca Brasi‘s fresh offering is Aeroplanes this has a great guitar hook and a rousing chorus and this acts a nice contrast to the their darker noisier partners on this split. Their second track, Borders And Statelines, which has previously appeared on the Loose Threads single, is an acoustic folk punk tune that whilst pleasant enough didn’t really grab me.
As with any Split EP this is a mixed bag but I can’t think of a better way of being introduced to both bands, maybe it’s time to dust off that tape deck and get a pencil ready for when it tries to eat the cassette.
