All Aboard is Washer‘s sophomore album, it is built on a blend of aggressive pop music, off-kilter structures, earnest lyrics, and minimalist garage rock. They’ve described their sound as “trying to do a lot with a little,” contorting simple pop formulas into fuzzy punk hits. Built around themes of personal doubt, self-reflection, and being stuck in place, All Aboard is a dark record, but Washer continue to fight toward brighter days. With a never ending onslaught of ramshackle hooks, sing-a-long anthems, and unexpected shifts, Washer have made an album where every moment counts and every song is a single.
All Aboard is now available via Exploding In Sound Records here
Maneka‘s debut album, Is You Is, is Devin McKnight‘s, of Grass Is Green and formerly of Speedy Ortiz, first solo album, a record the deals with themes of independence, self empowerment, urgency, and ownership. Self described as a “future-space alien-dream-post punk,” McKnight leaves behind years spent playing the role of guitarist to create his own project, writing every instrumental and vocal part on his own before sharing it with a collective of friends and collaborators.

Milked‘s new album, Death On Mars, is out now and is the second installment in Exploding In Sound Record‘s ongoing “extra spicy” Tape Club. Destined to be an underground favourite to be discovered in the future, Milked‘s official debut album is a stunning record that expands on Kelly Johnson‘s former band Geronimo!‘s fuzzy alternative rock, indie punk, and post-punk shimmer.

Death On Mars
Exploding In Sound Records
Exploding In Sound Records are set to release Milked‘s debut album, Death On Mars, on the 30th June, the album is the second instalment in the label’s ongoing EIS Tape Club. Milked were formed by former Geronimo! guitarist and vocalist Kelly Johnson following their split back in 2015, not one to take time out he immediately began creating solo music under the moniker of Milked, now with their debut album’s release imminent Milked can fulfil their promise to expand on Geronimo!‘s fuzzy post punk and post hardcore legacy, and with the release of Death On Mars they have exceeded their expectations as this is nothing short of a stunning debut full length.
White Punks offers an opening fuzzy grungey riff and insistent beat, this brief burst of fuzzy energy is a promising start and any fears that the rest of the album wouldn’t live up to it are instantly dispelled by the distorted tones of Caledonia, and by the time Oscillate bursts into life I am well and truly hooked on Milked‘s mix of fuzzy grunge, punk, garage and alternative influences. The album’s title track brings a sludgier influence to the album before Goodbye Durango kicks things back into gear with it’s infectious guitar hook and we get further three further full tilt hedonistic blasts before the album bows out with the darker closing number, Enouement.
Almost every track on Death On Mars will be a fixture on my playlist from now on, this is a distorted fuzz drenched album that means that Milked haven’t so much carried on the legacy left by Geronimo! as left it in their wake. Death On Mars is a near perfect nine tracks and is the finest instalment in the EIS Tape Club to date, it’s clear that this series is going to be an eclectic series showcasing the fuzzy underbelly of the alternative scene, now personally I don’t understand the revival in the cassette format as I remember losing many albums to my tape deck’s love of chewing up C90’s, and for those of you that also feel this way the album is available as an individual download.
You can pre-order Death On Mars and/or subscribe to the EIS Tape Club here

Can You Please Not Help
Exploding In Sound Records
Can You Please Not Help is the latest release from Two Inch Astronaut, this is the follow up to last year’s critically acclaimed full length, Personal Life, and it’s clear that they aren’t wasting any time as this will be the DC based trio’s fourth album in as many years. Two Inch Astronaut will be unleashing a complex hook laden album that possesses a wide range in mood, veering from the light and playful to suffocatingly dark and uncomfortably serious, the album also keeps you guessing with shifts in style, with everything from sweet pop hooks to tangled punk influences being on display.
Can You Please Not Help kicks off with Kenk, a brief atmospheric instrumental, before things start in earnest with the albums title track, a number that delivers an intense blast of alt rock that is tinged with a distinctly indie sensibility, from here on in the album weaves a uncertain path as it touches on the aforementioned genres along with touches of laid back math rock complexity that are delivered with a pop sheen. Can You Please Not Help is an unpredictable and original release that contains nine idiosyncratic slices of intricate indie cool that embraces a diverse rang of styles, but it never quite seems to find the cohesive and appealing blend that you feel is almost within their reach.
In Can You Please Not Help Two Inch Astronaut have released an album that will be adored by fans of the likes of We Are Scientists and Weezer, for me it never quite gets into it’s stride and after the impressive title track the momentum that was promised seems to get lost in a tangled web of intricate riffs. Can You Please Not Help is an album that is not without it’s charms, but these were somewhat lost on me as they meander through a twisting path that ultimately doesn’t seem to lead anywhere.
Can You Please Not Help will be released on June 2nd via Exploding In Sound Records and pre-orders are available here
Two Inch Astronaut have released a full stream of Can You Please Not Help, the band’s latest album, a week ahead of its release. The album is due out on June 2nd via Exploding In Sound Records. Exploding In Sound Records recently announced the launch of the EIS Tape Club, a year long cassette subscription service that boasts Anna Altman’s full length debut, Freightliner, as the debut release. Freightliner was released on April 28th and is not only available via The EIS Tape Club, for those with a preference for digital formats the album is also available for download. Anna Altman are comprised of the duo Lucia Arias and Christian Billard, both better known for their tenure in Turnip King, but this is not just a recreation of that band’s work, Anna Altman is a distinctly more laid back project.
Freightliner opens with The Interview, a track that possesses a bassline and beat that is more than a touch reminiscent of early New Order, with a breathless vocal delivery that reminds me of Pauline Murray, lead singer of punk band Penetration and latterly Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls. The Catcher then brings the pace down, and it’s here that the album remains, after the initial post punk feel of The Interview the album boasts a series of delicate melodies, gentle beats and tangled minimalist arrangements that will delight fans of Liz Phair, The Breeders, and Bedhead.
From the off Freightliner lays it’s cards on the table with it’s mix of influences from the UK’s post punk scene and US indie bands, but considering these influences the whole album feels restrained and after the opening track, The Interview, the album never seems to recover from it’s initial loss of momentum. Having said that, for those seeking a melodic and haunting soundtrack then Freightliner offers a serene hypnotic quality that is built on repeating structures and patterns overlaid with haunting vocals.

Baked have returned, the Brooklyn quintet will release their sophomore album, Farnham, on February 24th via Exploding In Sound Records. A lot has changed since the release of their debut full length, Debt, as members have changed, and with it their sound has evolved. The sonic world of Baked has grown, and with it comes a diverse record, drifting between enormous wall of sound guitars, dark fuzz, dusty country ballads and flashes of deviant post punk all of which is wrapped up in a suspiciously hazy aura that suggests the album was born of evenings in in a smokey twilight world of altered states. Baked have not made an album that is designed to produce hit singles and stand out tracks, although there are songs that do stand out on their own, this is an album made to be experienced as a twisted late night soundscape.
AA kick starts Farnham with a twisted driving rhythm and insistent vocal delivery all topped with off with some distorted treble laced lead guitar, the following track, Wolf, takes the album down into drawled hazy space that slowly fades towards the event horizon. After the dark fuzz of the opening duo the album veers off into the desert for the dark mescalin inspired Amy Rots that abruptly segues into Stay, the first track that features Isabella Mingione on lead vocal, the sweet harmony vocals juxtapose the dark twisted country vibe on this number perfectly. The album continues to veer wildly in styles, alternating between the dark fuzzy elements, haunted distorted reflections of country, lysergic inspired psyche and troubled ballads, these disperate styles are drawn together to create a unique sophomore album, one that I can confidently predict will be amongst my favourite releases from 2017.
If ever a band was the natural successor to the diverse strangeness of the Butthole Surfers, then I would say Baked have taken on that mantle with their latest release. Farnham is the most unpredictable album I’ve reviewed this year, like their aforementioned forefathers the influences on this album are so widespread this is an album that is impossible to categorise, but it is one that borders on perfection, whether it’s the dark haunting country influence or the driving substance fuelled numbers, Baked have made an album that few will surpass in 2017 and this is a release I would recommend to anyone who has a love for the strange, hazy and original.
Farnham can be pre-ordered here
Baked have shared their upcoming album, Farnham, in full via Consequence Of Sound. Once again proving to be unpredictable, Baked embrace dusty country, fuzzy slacker punk, distorted classic rock, and shoegaze, swirling it altogether into their own nuanced guitar shredding bliss. Due out February 24th, Farnham is a masterwork of hazy ballads, blistering riffs, thick haze, and slow burning rock ‘n’ roll.

Baked have shared Them, the latest single from the band’s impressive upcoming album Farnham. Once again proving to be unpredictable, this time Baked have embraced dusty country and an outlaw Americana twang on Them. Due out February 24th, Farnham is a masterwork of hazy ballads, blistering shoegaze, fuzzed out indie and slow burning rock ‘n’ roll.

Baked are back with their new single Stay, and the Brooklyn quintet are sounding like you’ve never heard them before with the band’s own Isabella Mingione taking over on lead vocals. Stay is a ballad about unwanted change, full of the band’s dusty country grooves, layered guitars, and distorted soul, it’s a song that builds on delicate nuances as Isabella leads you through an upended world. Baked have always been an extremely eclectic rock band but on Farnham, the new LP that is due for release on February 24th, there’s a whole new degree of texture to their dynamic slacker punk meets classic rock sound.
