Dead Heavens WWYA

Dead Heavens

Whatever Witch You Are

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 4/5

New York City’s Dead Heavens is the latest project of the prolific Walter Schreifels, whose pedigree includes Vanishing Life, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools and Quicksand, the band also includes members of Youth Gone Mad, White Zombie, Psychotica, Cults, Youth Of Today, Bold and Into Another. When you consider Dead Heavens extensive hardcore, punk and post hardcore credentials you probably think you’ve got a handle on what to expect, well you’d be wrong as this latest release sees Walter Schreifels remaining as unpredictable as ever and heading off into a new and unexpected direction.

Dead Heavens stand apart from the aforementioned projects Walter Schreifels has been involved in, Whatever Witch You Are takes us off into a decidedly headier psyche influenced direction. Rainbow Of The Ohm Chart eases you into album before Basic Cable, a blues influenced slab of psychedelic rock, confirms that this is a move away from Walter’s punk rock roots. But it’s not a complete turn around, Away From The Speed offers a proto punk influenced blast that is reminiscent of Vanishing Life, but for the most part this a laid back album of modern psychedelia that embraces blues influences alongside the lysergic elements

Whatever Witch You Are is closer to the blues and psychedelia of classic albums such as Disraeli Gears or Electric Ladyland rather than the comparisons you’d expect from a release from Walter Schreifels, but despite the shift in style he manages to incorporate the distinctive hallmark of his previous releases. The result is an album that somehow manages to be simultaneously completely different from anything he’s previously released whilst being an album that couldn’t have been released by anyone else, for me Whatever Witch You Are is the equal of Walter Schreifels previous releases and confirms his status as one of the most original and unpredictable stalwarts of the punk scene.

Whatever Witch You Are will be released tomorrow, June 16 2017, via Dine Alone Records and will be available on vinyl, with purple and purple and black splatter variants, CD, cassette and digital formats and is now available for pre-order from Dine Alone Records here

INVSN the beautiful stories

The Beautiful Stories

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 4/5

Sweden’s INVSN have released their new album, The Beautiful Stories, today, it was originally released earlier this year in their homeland on Woah Dad! Records, but today marks the first release of the album outside of their native Scandinavia and it is now available via their new international home, Dine Alone Records. INVSN are a band born of the Swedish punk and alternative scenes, their line up features members of Masshysteri, Tiger Forest Cat, Deportees, DS-13, Refused and The (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Beautiful Stories is their sophomore album and it follows on from their critically acclaimed self titled debut that was released in 2013.

Immer Zu opens with a distinctly post punk feel, it’s a track that recalls Joy Division, The Cure and Siouxsie And The Banshees and it veers between sparse verses and intense momens and rises to an irresistible chorus. This is a style that carries across the entirety of The Beautiful Stories, it’s an album that is informed by the intense angular post punk influences that populate all seven tracks with a moody and atmospheric feel. Over recent years I’ve found many post punk releases to be somewhat formulaic, with many bands merely adopting the style and attempt to recreate it, whilst INVSN are undoubtedly influenced by the same bands this is no pale imitation, INVSN bring the post punk influences right up to date and as a result they have brought something new to the genre.

The Beautiful Stories is a dark and atmospheric album that is born of post punk, but it’s combined with the collective members of INVSN‘s experience to bring new life to a scene that all to often wallows in the past. The Beautiful Stories is an accomplished and original album, yes of course you can hear the obvious influences, in particular there’s an obvious comparison to Siouxsie Sioux in some of the vocal deliveries, but this is an original dark hypnotic release that grows on you with every listen, and it is one that deserves to be heard beyond the confines of the Scandinavian borders.

You can purchase The Beautiful Stories via Dine Alone Records on CD, vinyl and digital formats here

Tours: Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat WorldHailing from Mesa, Ariz., well known alternative rockers Jimmy Eat World announced a string of tour dates throughout Canada. Check them out below.

Jimmy Eat World continues to tour in support of their ninth full-length album Integrity Blues, released October 2016 via Dine Alone Records. Watch the video to their latest single, Sure and Certain, here.

After the band’s 10th anniversary tour at the end of 2014, they decided to separate to work on other projects and reconvened again in late 2015.

In regards to writing the band’s most recent album, lead singer and guitarist Jim Adkins said:

“I came to a realization. In the break, writing was a little trickier. I wanted to change things up. So, instead of writing about a problem, I wanted to write about a solution. If you look at your life for what’s going wrong, it won’t be too hard to find things. If you start looking at what you have rather than what you’re missing out on, you come away from things with a much different perspective that’s a lot more grateful and positive. As an album, Integrity Blues is about trying to overcome that personal struggle instead of getting upset with what life could be that it isn’t.”

Adkins concluded with a reflection:

“I’ve wanted to play music since second grade, and here I am playing music. It’s something we’re immensely grateful for. That’s why we don’t take it lightly. We want to be in a constant state of progress. You have to move forward in a way that’s challenging and evolving. At the end of the day, you have to be proud of your own work. We are. If you breathe that in and believe it, you’ve won.”

We had 5 days to write some songs in between tours in the US & UK and we busted out a fuck load of tunes having a blast in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. One day we went to ask people at Walmart if they “Scott Green?”…and it took all day. When we got back Zac said “you better have a fucken song after wasting a day looking for who’s got green. We just started making a song about the day – “Who’s Scott Green” – and that was it.

Vanishing Life

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 4/5

Vanishing Life are an alternative and punk supergroup that features …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead‘s Autry Fulbright and Jamie Miller, the latter of which is also the sticksman for Bad ReligionWalter Schreifels, formerly of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits and Rival Schools, and Zach Blair, from Rise Against, which is a combination that should tantalise anyone who has a love of music from the noisier side of the street. Vanishing Life release their debut album, Surveillance, today, November 25th, via Dine Alone Records, if you were expecting some straight up punk rock, based on the former bands of the majority of the members, then you’ll be in for a surprise, as this is not the album you’d have been anticipating.

From the outset Surveillance is a pounding collection of stripped down fuzzed up garage punk, the second single from the album, The Realist, kicks things off with a grungy hook laden riff, that you’ll find stuck in your head for hours after you’ve listened to the album. Despite the rigid approach to the dark distorted style the songwriting carries enough variety to stop the album ever becoming repetitive. From the upbeat and relentless tracks Painter and Exile, the first single off the album, to the fucked up fuzz of Pretty Ruined and Seven Pointed Star  through to the dark and frantic nature of the title track and People Running, Surveillance is a pulverising forty minutes of fuzzy punk rock

The whole of Surveillance has a lo-fi appeal and resembles the lovechild of a chance meeting between the Mudhoney and Jane’s Addiction after a heavy night out. The album is punctuated by two brief unnecessary instrumentals, that for me don’t fit alongside the rest of the material, but this slight fault aside this is an unpredictable barrage of dark fuzz that defies any preconceptions that you may have had about Vanishing Life, and what more could you ask for from a debut album?

Surveillance will be available for pre-order on all formats from Dine Alone Records here

Vanishing Life Stream ‘Thinking is Weightless’ From ‘Surveillance’

vanishing-lifeVanishing Life have streamed a rocking new track, Thinking Is Weightless, the track is taken from their forthcoming debut full length album, Surveillance, that will be released on November 25th via Dine Alone Records in the UK. Big, loud, intricate, and building on the tenets of guitar driven rock, the immediacy of Vanishing Life’s debut LP Surveillance is gripping. They steadily tap The Fall, Black Flag, Savages, Angel Olsen, The Damned, Grinderman, B’last, and early Wire, with a modernity and focus, never nostalgia.

The Flatliners Announce New EP

The FlatlinersThe Flatliners have announced that they will be releasing a new EP/7″.  The album will be titled Nerves and is set to drop on Friday, October 28, 2016 via Dine Alone Records.  Frontman Chris Cresswell comments:

“For the first time in about a decade, we spent the majority of the year off the road and at home in 2015. Even though to most it must have seemed like we were laying low for most of the year, 2015 became a year of constant inspiration and ever evolving scenery and surroundings. There was a refreshing, cooling feeling that came over the task at hand and the craft we’ve honed. And with ‘Nerves’ we invite you to dip your toes in the deep end of the pool.”

Vanishing Life Announce Debut Album ‘Surveillance’

vanishing-lifePunk quartet Vanishing Life, that features members of Rise Against, Quicksand, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Gorilla Biscuits and Bad Religion, have announced their debut album, Surveillance, will be released on November 11th via Dine Alone Records. The album features the new single, The Realist, as well as the previously released single, Exile, and twelve more fuzzed out, hard hitting punk rock jams. Vanishing Life distil the hard charged energy and spirit of their punk and hardcore histories into a stripped down, urgent sound that’s reflective of their unique individual talents, but the furthest thing from a retread. The first two singles are available via iTunes and the full album pre-orders will launch on October 14th.

Jeff The Brotherhood Zero

JEFF The Brotherhood

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 4.5/5

Since their formation fifteen years ago, whilst still in high school in Nashville, Tennessee, JEFF The Brotherhood have been consistently dishing out their own brand of psychedelic fuzzed up power pop ever since. This is JEFF The Brotherhood‘s eleventh studio album, Zone follows hot on the heels of their two 2015 album releases, Wasted On The Dream, and Global Chakra Rhythms.

Zone opens with the title track, which contains a sinister fuzzed up funeral beat accompanied by dark swirling keyboards, this switches to the opening pounding riff of Energy, that swiftly eases back into a lonesome guitar riff before mutating into a sonic blast of psychedelia. Punishment is a short garage influenced number, which begins as a simple riff before a mass of effects are stamped into action, giving the number a much fuzzier heavier tone. My personal favourite on Zone is Juice, apart from it’s wonderful bouncy riff it contains the lyric ‘I’m getting busted in a space shuttle’ which is probably the best metaphor for Zone that I can think of, it feels like the Ramones under the influence of mind expansion. The tracks that follow are equally upbeat, Roachin’ sounds like Hole should have sounded and Idiot is a slice of pure exhuberant fuzzy power pop. After this trio of infectious fuzzy songs the album abruptly switches to the downbeat Ox, this is an album that constantly changes style and tempo but all the while maintaining a unique character and dark fuzziness. The final two tracks, You and Portugal, are heavy epic numbers that bring the album to a gloriously noisy end.

Zone can be stratospheric one moment and downbeat, heartfelt, hedonistic and suspiciously hazy the next. Shades of substance use and the character of the darker end of pyschedelia and garage are prevalent alongside a raw punk influence, this collision of influences has made this is a truly individual band and, more importantly, one that has made a truly great album. I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t encountered Jeff The Brotherhood prior to this album, but that is something I’m going to rectify. Whilst there are another fourteen albums to investigate I think that Zone would be the perfect starting point to acquaint yourself with this band. JEFF The Brotherhood have produced a superb and strange amalgamation of garage fuzz, psychedelic strangeness, indie cool and punk attitude, in short it is an excellent and utterly unique album that I think you need to own.

Zone is due for release on September 30th via Dine Alone Records and you can pre order the album here

Video: HeyRocco – Build It Up

Heyrocco WOCSouthern Californian trio Heyrocco has premiered a new music video.  The video features the song “Build It Up” from their latest EP, Waiting On Cool, available now via Dine Alone Records.  The band comments on the video:

“Our video for Build It Up was calling for buildings falling and fiery explosions. Since we don’t live in LA with a big budget, we had to approach it differently. Nathan’s pen pal in Japan put on a Godzilla suit and tore down his apartment to make this video for us. Somehow within that parameter we felt there was also a statement to be made with social media obsession so we tried to tie those ideas together in a sort of end times corollary.”

Double Vanity

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 3.5/5

Oklahoma’s Broncho have bought us their third album, Double Vanity, via Dine Alone Records. This is the follow up to their 2014 release Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, the easy path would have been to continue in the style of their critically acclaimed sophomore album, thankfully they have chosen a more challenging and rewarding path. This a shift away from their first two releases and takes us into darker stranger territory.

The band have stated that the goal on this release was to slow things down, but to somehow retain the energy of their earlier releases, as much as this sounds like an impossible contradiction I think they have achieved this reality defying goal. From the slow burning opener, All Time, with its heavy distorted riff, the pace and intensity of Double Vanity very slowly rises, peaking at the tracks New Karma and Speed Demon, before it slowly eases you back down again. This is a genre spanning release, there are touches of psychedelia and garage in addition to hints of beach boys harmony, a smattering of dirty blues and the occasional dark fifties melody, but all done with an impressive individual twist. This album floats in a suspicious haze of atmospheric garage rock textures and dark reverb that is strangely comforting.

Broncho remind me of a pummelling version of The Raveonettes when they were in their prime. This is no predictable straight up indie rock release, Double Vanity is a strange dark beast of an album, but it is one that will lurk happily in your collection, until late one night the mood will take you to play Double Vanity and you will happily slip into it’s uncompromising embrace.

Double Vanity will be released on the 17th June and can be pre-ordered from the usual sources, or directly from Dine Alone Records here:

Waiting On Cool

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 2.5/5

Heyrocco are a trio from South Carolina who grew up together in the town of Charleston, in 2009 they formed the band, and haven’t looked back since. They have toured relentlessly, even playing in Europe, and have been gaining favourable press coverage. Waiting On Cool has followed hot on the heels of last years debut album, Teenage Movie Soundtrack.

Opening track Yeah is an awesome blast of punk influenced bouncy energy which boasts an infectious riff, and this sets the bar high for the rest of the EP, possibly too high. The pace immediately drops after this promising start. It’s Always Something New and Slice Of Life replace the energy of the opening track for low tempo tracks with a yearning vocal delivery that recall early Dinosaur Jnr. We build back up for the appropriately titled Build It Up but it doesn’t hit the heights of the opening track. Venice Beach and closing track Perfect World round out the EP, and once more the energy dissipates.

The problem with Waiting On Cool that it feels like a showcase for their new material rather than a coherent EP. The highs are great, Yeah is as good as a foot-tapper as you’ll hear this year, but any impetus they build up is quickly lost and that makes this a frustrating listen. After the impressive opening Salvo of Yeah they were going to be hard pressed to hit those heights consistently, maybe my expectations were raised to an unrealistic level but I found myself waiting for that initial rush to be repeated, sadly it never was and that’s a shame.

Waiting on Cool is available via Dine Alone Records and can be ordered here

Solids Else

Top Shelf Records / Dine Alone Records

Rating: 2.5/5

Solids are a Canadian duo from Montreal, they are comprised of guitarist and vocalist Xavier Germain-Poitras and drummer Louis Guillemette, prior to forming Solids back in 2009 they were both active members of hardcore acts in their native Canada. They have been relentlessly touring in the two long years that have passed since their debut album Blame Confusion was released, now they’re back with a new EP, Else.

Blank Stare and Blurs are both excellent Alt-Rock influenced Lo-Fi numbers that tick all the boxes, on the flip side of this Shine and Wait It Out are in comparison sluggish and sullen, whilst I’m all for a touch of variety from a band the songs contained on this EP just don’t seem to gel together. In essence Else comes across as a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde affair, on the one hand we have two excellent upbeat alt-rockers that will happily reside on my playlist, but then their darker side takes hold with two listless meandering numbers.

This is the essence of Alt Rock condensed into twenty minutes and whether you will like this release depends whether you are a fan of that genre. For me this is a hit and miss affair, this probably reflects my tastes but also the fact that this EP shows the various facets of Solids, they are unafraid to be experimental in their compositions and that is something to be admired, but the downside is that sometimes experiments produce unfortunate results.

Else can be purchased here.

The Dirty Nil

Higher Power

Dine Alone Records

Rating: 3.5/5

Good things come to those that wait.  This couldn’t be truer in the case of Hamilton, Ontario’s The Dirty Nil.  The band has been releasing splits and EPs for a good while now, but the road to their first full-length has been a lengthy one.  Rather than rush in and risk botching that once-per-career right of passage, the trio has comfortably shopped around from minor release to release, finally meeting up with the good folks on the reputable Dine Alone Records.  The band’s rough and distorted brand of grunge-coated punk and alternative fit well alongside the label’s diverse ragtag roster.

The fruits of their labour, the eleven song full length Higher Power, offers up a familiar yet surprisingly modern take on the increasingly aged grunge scene.  Opener “No Weaknesses” squeals open to the hearty crunch of full-bodied riffs, to which vocalist Luke Bentham responds with a sloppy, throaty wail reminiscent of that which defined 90’s alternative.  The defining difference with The Dirty Nil rests with the intermittently accelerating tempo and sudden lurching stops of Luke Bentham’s raw bursts.  Rather than sit and stew in the muddy sludge of guitar, the verse erupts rampantly from a thundering bassy tempo.  The final thirty seconds screech obnoxiously as if the band makes a point to flex their obvious garage-punk muscles.

For the most part, Higher Power is a fairly casual listen with a rough edge.  “Wrestle Yu To Husker Du” serves as an appropriate homage to it’s namesake, highlighting the overlapping melodic hardcore genre characteristics.  Tracks like “Lowlives” and “Fugue State” hold nothing back to the point of taking after unapologetic thrash bands like Outbreak with the thicker edge of Every Time I Die.  These grimy, guttural moments may not be as prominent as the slower burning, Nirvana-inspired norms like “Know Your Rodent,” but they more than do their job of defining The Dirty Nil as a band of today.

The band has likely released the full length debut they had been waiting to deliver.  For a rough and tumble band combining elements of indie, grunge and thrash, The Dirty Nil bring it altogether with commendable coherence.  Listeners with a hesitancy towards anything neo-grunge may want to sit this one out, but the rest of us stand to to gain substantial enjoyment from these mumbling, throaty Canadians.   With plenty of room for further growth and genre hybridization, the horizon appears vast for The Dirty Nil.
