Darius Koski of Swingin’ Utter fame surprised the punk world with Sisu, his impressive solo debut.  Flavoured with twangy folk-punk ranging from boppity country to the essence of brooding gothic folk-punk, Koski has an uncanny knack for keeping listeners on their toes.  For his follow-up release, What Once Was Is By And Gone, Koski takes a deep plunge into the lesser known, making for some wholly unexpected and fairly unique songs.  One moment he’s channelling Johnny Cash, and the next Tom Waits.  Koski is confident in his risk taking, and the result is unlike anything else on the Fat Wreck Chords roster.

But before we delve into the less conventional side of things, it’s worth noting that What Once Was Is By And Gone still offers many songs in line with Koski’s previous effort.  Opener “Black Sheep” offers the familiar casual twang running through Koski’s country tracks, with “Because He’s Beautiful” building up to a trot with a little more of that full bodied guitar punch and “Yes I Believe” featuring a big ol’ upright bass leaning heavily on rockabilly for inspiration.  “Dead End Days” and “Little Johnny” could even pass as stripped down versions of Swingin’ Utters b-sides.  Collectively, there’s a small EP worth of familiar sounds drawing comparisons with Larry & His Flask and Greenland Is Melting spaced throughout the album.  This ensures that regardless of how far Koski strays, he always veers back to safety.

And does he ever stray. Moments after “Black Sheep” Koski launches into “Old Bones,” a stripped down organ and acoustic guitar piece with a soft piano crescendo that can only be described as delicate.  Quiet, personal, and reflective, Koski exudes a humbleness seldom explored by any punk frontman’s solo endeavors.  “Stay With Me” ventures further down the rabbit hole in a song best understood as a serenade.  From the ghostly opening whistle, to the sorrowful violin and enchanting female accompaniment, the song evokes blissful emotions most suited for a private waltz amongst lovers.  These are words and associations I never imagined I would make with Koski, and bare little resemblance to anything in my music library.  Perhaps the oddest inclusion lies in the three minute instrumental intermission, “Soap Opera.”  Almost entirely piano driven, the track matches its moniker, and could perhaps serve as an opening theme to a psychological thriller set in a 1930’s manor house.  Heck, it’s cinematic feel could probably fit snuggly somewhere in an episode of Downton Abbey.  

What Once Was Is By And Gone is an unexpected listen.  It’s one of those Fat Wreck Chords releases that you might have a hard time envisioning Fat Mike blasting in his decked out van.  But that shouldn’t shy Koski’s core fanbase from taking note.  Darius Koski has really put himself out there in a unique and unconventional way, and for the most part, it works.  While a few tracks, like the hazy washed out take on 60’s psychedelia ”Imitation Tala,” are less memorable, the album is a respectable grower that reveals subtle nuances with each passing listen.  Given that Swingin’ Utters fans are probably at a place in their life where they will accept these curiosities, What Once Was Is By And Gone is an album that Koski’s fans may have not known they were waiting for.  So go ahead, take the plunge, your curiosity will be rewarded.

Reviews Roundup: April 3 – 17

Reviews from April 3rd – April 17th

  • For starters, Joel Poe confirmed that YouTube stardom doesn’t necessarily translate well offline, and Rain City Rockers showed us that covering theme songs from your favourite Saturday morning anime series might not be the best use of your musical talents.
  • Meanwhile, Long Knives gave us a well balanced example of female-fronted male-backed indie, and Football, etc… brought a female touch to the often male-dominated emo scene.
  • The Swingin’ Utters camp gave us another reason to love Darius Koski, and Paul Cargnello returned mostly to the anglophone side of Montreal for his latest full length.
  • All Get Out released a little EP with a big sound, and finally, The Pukes reminded us that the ukelele can be a fun little tool – especially when used by an eighteen person band.

Whenever an entrenched punk frontman announces solo intentions as a folk-punk troubadour, it’s hard not to proceed cautiously.  After all, it’s a crowded scene, and anything short of inspiring just won’t cut it amidst front runners like Chuck Ragan, Dave Hause, Sundowner, Brendan Kelly and Jason Cruz.  After sitting on the sidelines observing his Fat Wreck peers, Swingin’ Utters co-vocalist Darius Koski joins the party with his first solo effort, Sisu.  Rest assured you can leave any of that aforementioned skepticism at the door – Sisu fast reveals itself as one of the most dynamic acoustic/folk solo debuts of the year.  

Darius Koski embraces a refreshingly traditional approach to country and folk that distances him from his counterparts.  Sisu’s fifteen tracks play out in forty minutes of geographically and generationally varied inspirations rooted in a dusty, gritty and genuine delivery.  “Fond Of, Lost To,” with its clear old-country leanings and thumping bass, fits the bill as an opening strummer.  Rooted in a honky tonk core, Koski’s rustic persona lives on the surface of simple tracks like “Listen!” and “Do Nothing.”  The twanging distortion and deep, accompanying melodic baritone vocal harmonies make for quick tempoed strummers informed from a career of writing punk tunes.  An entire album in this style would have been a strong statement, but Sisu eyes much grander aspirations.

If only for a song or two at a time, Darius Koski pulls from all walks of punk-infused, country lovin’ life.  For instance, traces of Tater Famine and Greenland Is Melting flavour “Empty Thing’s” sultry acoustic notes and gliding beat.  Like something from an idyllic sunny-day blue-sky movie montage, the effect feels foreign in Koski’s songwriting career – but it works.  Confidence is key in “Tension Talk” as the song draws upon a rustic rambler attitude akin to Larry & His Flask.  Meanwhile, “Contacts and Contracts” breezily sails along with a poetic acoustic poise typically reserved for moody indie-folk outfit Have Gun. Will Travel.  “Bells” even channels a heavy 60’s psychedelia with Koski slowing down and forcing out a wiry vocal presence circa Robyn Hitchcock.  Alternatively, the violin and piano duo in “Paper Tigers, Plastic Lions” make for some sort of cinematic, suspenseful amalgamation of gothic folk origin – the type that put Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Butcher Knives and early Elliott Brood on the map.  But perhaps the most encouraging surprise is the downright addictive and poppy nature of “Show Me The Way’s” whistling country chorus (I found myself whistling this tune for weeks on end).

Sisu only loses steam momentarily during some of the slower, sappier moments.  “So Help Me” and “On Leaving” lack the instrumental “oomph” of their counterparts, falling in the shadow of the album’s masterful and emotional concluding piece, “Everybody Leaves.”

“I’m always just passing through, I’m always on the move,” proclaims Koski during the album’s final moments – and you’d be hard pressed to find a more representative description of Sisu’s diverse eclectic path.  Simply put, Darius Koski is a sonic nomad that refuses to stay pinned down by any one style.  That Koski keep listeners guessing as to Sisu’s evolving path makes for an entirely original and worthwhile experience that more than justifies Darius Koski’s inaugural solo effort.

Darius Koski (Swingin’ Utters) Announced First Solo Album

Darius KoskiDarius Koski (Swingin’ Utters) has announced plans for his first solo record.  The fifteen track album is titled SISU and is expected to drop on April 7, 2015 via Fat Wreck Chords.  Darius Koski explains what fans can expect:

“The release of this record has got to be one of the highlights of my life so far. I’ve always written songs like this (in a genre other than punk rock), but the only outlet I’ve had for them has always been maybe a song or two on Utters, or Filthy Thieving Bastards records. I have a lot of material that’s just been sitting around for 25 years, with no outlet, and it’s been frustrating. None of the songs on “Sisu” are quite that old, but there are a few that I know I wrote around ’99. I’ve wanted to do this my whole life—I’ve always wanted to be a solo artist, so this really is a lifelong dream of mine. There are so many good vibes and strange positive energy in the last few sentences that now I think I’ve given myself a headache and need to drink some beers, to get back in my own head…”

Darius Koski will be hitting the road in April with multi-instrumentalist Ryan Davidson, who has contributed to the album.
