Michigan power pop trio Cheap Girls have announced the release of God’s Ex-Wife, a collection of rarities and B-sides from their back catalouge, that has been released via Asian Man Records. This is their first release since 2014’s critically acclaimed album, Famous Graves and serves as a teaser to an album of new material that was hinted at after their 2015 tour with The Restorations and Chris Farren. When I see that a band has assembled a collection of their unreleased and obscure material I become nervous, as something of a completist with certain bands I’ve bought compilations of unreleased material, and swiftly discovered why it was wasn’t released, so what does God’s Ex Wife have in store?

Opening track Better Thoughts Instead kicks off the album in fine style with three minutes of power pop perfection and Twice As Much keeps the momentum going nicely. The tempo is kept up until you hit the mid way mark, Cheap Girls give you a breather from the fine power pop at this point with the mellow introspective acoustic number, Gone All Summer. God’s Ex-Wife swiftly kicks back in with an impressive alternate take of Cored To The Empty and a cover of Bad Religion‘s Kerosene. The format for the second half of this collection mirrors the first as you get five more energetic numbers, before the album draws to a close in a quieter fashion with I Know, Right. God’s Ex-Wife is an impressive collection of ten tracks of power pop bookmarked by two slower and acoustic numbers, this is an album that doesn’t in any way resemble a collection of rejected songs and b-sides.

The fact that an album of this quality can be made up of from a collection of b-sides, outtakes and compilation appearances is very impressive, and it tells you everything you need to know about Cheap Girls. Many collections of outtakes and b-sides reflect the fact that the material is not from when a band is firing on all cylinders, and they are strictly for die hard fans. This is certainly not the case with God’s Ex-Wife, the majority of the tracks on here would have happily graced a full album, or in some cases made a damn fine single. This is a collection that shows you exactly why the Cheap Girls are held in such high esteem by bands such as The Gaslight Anthem, Joyce Manor, Against Me! and The Hold Steady.

Mid-90’s alternative college-rock gets a lot of love by those who lived it.  Affectionate Gin Blossoms and Bare Naked Ladies references abound from those like my brother-in-law who are nearly twenty years my senior and still pull out weathered CD jewel cases purchased at the advent of the modern medium.  That’s where Michigan’s Cheap Girls latest full length, Famous Graves, may finally offer a changeup to the tired after-dinner soundtrack shamelessly repeated at family gatherings.

Much like contemporaries Failure’s Union, Cheap Girls channel a slightly below mid-tempo, electric guitar driven style with plenty of casual rolling riffs and predictably steady vocals.  In many ways there is absolutely nothing remarkable about the trio’s output.  The songs conform to a standard alt-rock model and fit within a pretty tight box.  Tracks like “Knock Me Over” and “Amazing Grace” repeat singular passages in late song bridges ad nauseum (think Foo Fighters but with personality).  Where they can be forgiven though is Cheap Girls’ level of warmth and comfort.  The songs may not always be individually memorable, but they never become grating or obnoxious, even with an admittedly high level of album repetition.

That being said, definite standouts like “Man In Question” inject a little something extra into their chorus.  Where front man Ian Graham mumbles his way through much of Famous Graves,  “Man In Question” injects some much-needed vocal animation (along with an appearance by The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn) and a salvo of mid-song group “wo-oa-oahs” led by brother Ben Graham.  Similarly, acoustic-leaning album closer “Turns” extends with the hum of late-track organs and more clearly enunciated trail of lyrics.  The difference is subtle, but the strongest tracks resist overindulgence in that muddy 90’s vocal grunge.

In the end, Famous Graves is an approachable outing that modern fans can enjoy, but that aging 90’s college graduates will offer the most adoration.  Partly built on nostalgia and certainly intended to fill today’s void of dwindling college alt-rock, Cheap Girls keep it simple when playing to this very marketable niche, even if safety and predictability remain at the core.

Tom Gabel To Produce Cheap Girls Album

Cheap GirlsMichigan rockers, Cheap Girls, have announced plans to return to the studio to work on their third full-length album and have asked the pervasive Tom Gabel (Against Me!) to take on the roll of producer.  Here’s what Cheap Girls had to say:

“First, let’s talk about the last few months. We’ve had a few weeks off from touring and we’ve been using it to write, learn, and tune-up a large chunk of the songs that’ll make up our 3rd record. We’ve got about 13 so far and we’re continuing to add to that. This time around, our friend Tom Gabel has been helping out with the process and we couldn’t be happier with what we have so far. We became good friends back in the winter when we toured with his band Against Me! and we realized he’d be a great fit to fill the Producer role.”

Before heading back into the studio, Cheap Girls will be touring with Bomb The Music Industry! along the east coast followed by a string of dates through Europe in company with Lemuria.

Cheap Girls last released My Roaring 20’s in 2009 with Paper + Plastick.
