Split

These two bands are like fucking Mysterio – every time I think I’ve got a handle on them; they disappear in a puff of smoke. I really wanted to enjoy these bands, as I’ve heard nothing but good things about both – and yet….

Tigers Jaw does have an interesting vibe going on, with the vocals running somewhere between the frequently-deadpanned delivery of Matt Skiba coupled with some random Saddle Creek or Count Your Lucky Stars shoegazer. Meanwhile, the music comes across as the kind of drifting post-punk that wanders between thick, guitar-heavy production and ironic playfulness. Their half of the split reminds me of both The Bomb – Jeff Pezatti’s tepid new project – and a morose, barbiturate-laden younger brother of the Smoking Popes. Well-executed but lacking in strong songwriting; they can play their shit, but what they’ve written is just kind of there.

Balance & Composure fare better if only because they temper their brooding with a tad more energy and abandon – though I should mention they’ve got three guitarists, lending that much more potential for a controlled recklessness. Still, as a whole, compositions like “Kaleidoscope” and “Rope” sound like a battle-weary Young Livers trading skinny, eyebrow-splitting jabs with a much nicer emo pop band likeAutumn Picture or something. Meaning they come across as just a tad more ferocious (and focused) than their compatriots.

I keep finding both bands filed or mentioned as “pop punk” on various websites and find this totally baffling. The delicate interlude in Balance & Composure’s “Burden” is rife with indie pop leanings, and despite the fact that Tigers Jaw has some distortion-fattened guitars, their hooks are odd, buried ones ala Jawbox. When I think of pop punk, I think of bands with clear focus and a linear (though not necessarily simple) delivery.  Both of these guys come across as more directionless than that, or at least more obscured in their intentions. Ultimately, it feels like neither band really comes out swinging.

Anthony Green To Appear On New Balance And Composure Record

Balance and ComposureCirca Survive‘s Anthony Green has announced via his Instagram page that he would be recording guest vocals for Doylestown, PA’s Balance and Composure who are due to release their new album this fall.

Speaking about the collaboration, Green said that he was  “so excited about the new @balanceandcomposure record. I had the honor of singing on a track and I can honestly say its one of the best songs they ever wrote. Go check it out at http://balanceandcomposure.com and tell them how much they rule and tell them I sent ya.”

Balance and Composure announced earlier this week that they would be releasing their second full-length album, The Things We Think We’re Missing, through No Sleep Records on September 10th. The band have released a song from the album, entitled Reflections, which you can listen to here.

Balance and Composure - Only Boundaries

Balance and Composure‘s sophomore EP, Only Boundaries, is a nicely packaged, one-sided 12inch vinyl release with bonus CD and limited to only five hundred copies. For vinylphiles, that fact in and of itself may spark some interest. However, the fact of the matter is that Only Boundaries features something more than just sheer collectability, and that’s some pretty decent tunes.

The four song EP clocks in at around eighteen minutes, which is kind of long for just four tracks and makes the idea of a full length somewhat daunting; but in those eighteen minutes Balance and Composuredeliver a very compelling and captivating sound that keeps your attention for the entire play time. Now, before you get any ideas, Only Boundaries isn’t anything new or revolutionary. In fact, the exact opposite is true as they take a step back and pull from a style almost gone in the current MySpace world of mass consumerism. Merging elements of alternative, indie and mid-nineties emo along the lines of Texas Is The Reason and Sunny Day Real EstateBalance and Composure has a slow but determined pulse pounding through the release.

There’s a sense of confidence embedded within the songs; a confidence that brings the record a step forward as the band seems perfectly clear as to what they’re trying to accomplish. There’s a crunchy sensation to it, pushed through by distorted guitars and a generally low-end sound. The two vocalists, Jon Simmons and Andy Slaymaker exchange vocals over top of one another ever so lightly, creating a nice contrast that is natural and barely noticeable rather than forced and evident. The vocals are actually an interesting facet in the band’s sound because on their own they’re not necessarily the strongest vocals around. The opening line of the EP, “I gave up long ago,” is delivered in such a fashion that I thought perhaps my record player was spinning at the wrong speed. It’s a nasally, slow and elongated delivery that is repeated a few times throughout the EP but it soon feels natural in the structure of the song. The raspy wails portray a sense of emotion and instantly bring up memories of vocalists from numerous other acts, acts who’s names unfortunately escape my memory for the time being.

All of it adds up for an EP that has some very high replay value. It’s not necessarily an EP that will stick out in your memory banks long after you stopped playing it, but when the needle drops it is immediately compelling. Instead of being excessively loud and chaotic, Only Boundaries pulses with a steady deliverance where each instrument works together for a full sound that ebbs and flows with emotion and intensity and finally cumulates with a passionate chant of Hallelujah, I’m coming home!; and it’s a chant I’ll happily play over and over again.

Vs The Earthquake: Benefit Compilation To Help Japan

Vs The EarthquakeA collection of bands (including Title Fight, The Swellers, Mixtapes, The Wonder Years, Valencia,  La Dispute, Balance and Composure, Man Overboard, Transit and more) have come together to release a compilation of rare tracks to benefit the victims of the earthquake and its after effects in Japan.

The twenty-two track compilation, Vs. The Earthquake, can be purchased for a minimum $5 donation here.

The compilation is a collection of primarily rare, hard to find or unreleased recordings all donated by the bands. The artwork was done by James Heimer. The storefront was donated by Limited Pressing and currently, Paypal is allowing you to send money to charities without taking any fees. This means that, aside from the standard fee Paypal may take out when money enters an account, 100% of the money will be going to Americares to help the Japanese.

Jono from The Swellers explained:

After hearing about the tragedies in Japan we knew we had to do something. One thing all of us in bands can do is provide music, raise awareness and money for the relief efforts. We submitted our acoustic version of the song “By A Thread” because it is about overcoming odds and having faith in humanity. It was the b-side from the Japan release of our album My Everest so we figured it was perfect for this cause. Please donate to this comp or to Red Cross directly. Anything helps and no one should ever have to feel the way they do right now. Thank you.
