Nobody Likes A Quitter

Nobody Likes A Quitter is the new album from All Get Out, it will be released via Bad Timing Records and Favourite Gentlemen Recordings tomorrow, October 28th. It’s been a long wait for the follow up to their 2011 full length, The Season, this latest release was produced and co-written by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell, both of whom are members of the Manchester Orchestra, who along with Nathan Hussey have collaborated to create an anthemic indie record that will presumably appeal greatly to fans of both bands. However for those who are unfamiliar with the work of either artist we need to explore Nobody Likes A Quitter.

Room To Talk opens proceedings and it does it in fine style, it varies between a plodding indie style, that is augmented by sparkling keyboards, and an upbeat chorus that boasts a much heavier guitar sound, the two parts are in contrast to each other yet they fit together perfectly. Home is a consistently frantic number that features a staccato drum beat with an offbeat timing that makes the song a slightly challenging listen, but this is a powerful track that well and truly kickstarts the album into life. Chasing Skirt is delivered in a more straight forward style that features a strident drum beat and Whatever is a great anthemic indie rock number. The album takes a well earned breather at the half way mark with the haunting Empty Nest, the latter half of the album is another five tracks of contrasting styles and influences, including the wonderful Now You Got It, that mirrors the initial handful of tracks by bowing out on a mellow note.

Firstly it must be said that Nobody Likes A Quitter has been superbly produced by the members of the Manchester Orchestra and what this collaboration has delivered is a varied and well crafted album that has something for pretty much everyone, from the punkier influences, through soulful introspective moments,  there’s even a country twang that creeps in here and there, and obviously there’s a healthy dose of indie rock that is an almost omnipresent influence. I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this album as much as I did,  Nobody Likes A Quitter is damn fine release that is the result of a collaboration between two artists, between them they have produced an album that is stronger than either of their previous works. Five years is a long time to wait for an album, but I can safely say that Nobody Likes A Quitter was worth it.

Nobody Likes A Quitter can be ordered via Bad Timing Records here

Jesse Lacey / Kevin Devine

Devinyl Splits No. 6

Bad Timing Records
By

Rating: 2/5

Over the past year or so Bad Timing Records has been releasing singles from its Devinyl Splits Project, they have now reached the sixth and final instalment in this volume. Kevin Devine has been present on each of these releases and in this latest offering he is matched with Jesse Lacey, of Brand New and formerly of Taking Back Sunday. On this release both artists contribute a cover version of a well known R.E.M. track.

In both cases these are acoustic covers of the songs, Jesse Lacey has covered Bad Day and Kevin Devine has taken on Imitation of Life. Both artists are clearly heavily influenced by Michael Stipe‘s song writing and delivery and this release comes across as something of a lover letter to Mr. Stipe. I’m of the opinion if you’re going to do a cover version then you should stamp your own identity onto it, there are countless examples of punk and indie bands who have taken a well known song and performed it in their own style, but this isn’t one of them. Whilst both tracks on this release are perfectly listenable cover versions neither brings anything new to the table, and I’m left wondering what the point is as the original songs are better and easily available.

Having said that, this will go down well with fans of the indie folk scene and R.E.M.  but personally I think if you want these songs I’d probably recommend buying the R.E.M. compilation In Time that contains the original versions.

The ltd edition Devinyl Splits single can be ordered here.

I, No Longer

Bad Timing Records
By

Rating: 3.5/5

Pentimento return with their latest full length instalment, I, No Longer.  The Buffalo, New York four-piece has undergone a noticeable transition since their earliest years.  Their ongoing momentum has brought them from a place of slightly brash, more predictable songwriting to their current destination, which leans most heavily on channelling a smoother take on their 90’s influenced emo roots.  Favouring vocal cleanness over roughness, Pentimento are working at their most melodic, which is good news for fans of their previous EP, Inside The Sea.

While previous efforts struck listeners with their most intense melodies at the easiest moments, I, No Longer opens on one of the album’s most reserved notes.  Vocalist Jeramiah Pauly sings softly without a hint of grain in his angsty style, not unlike that of a more mature Light Years.  With long, drawn out vocal notes placed against tepid shore crashing sonic waves, “Small Talk For Strangers” finds balance between stringy guitar and full bodied riffs.  Culminating in a slow burning chorus of backing vocals, Pentimento bridges the track with follow up “My Solution Is In The Lake.”  There’s somewhat of a Tigers Jaw meets Tales Don’t Tell Themselves era Funeral For A Friend loosely lurking somewhere in Pauly’s polished performance.  In other words, they’ve since hung up their dash of hardcore in favour of pursuing bigger, song spanning harmonies.

I, No Longer is a remarkably calm album for Pentimento.  Tracks like “Slow But Sure” and “Sink Or Swim” layer on vocals and guitars in melodic sequence, building up to reasonably catchy choruses that blend the altrock elements of Taking Back Sunday with the jangly structures characteristic of Hostage Calm and Transit.  The ease of play mirrors post-punk stalwarts Brand New during minimal, melancholy moments.  For instance “No Matter What” and “Getaway” hover around such a place although they never really reach the dark depths implicit in that comparison.  The band feels very confident in their delivery, although at times they feel as if they’re taking a safer route than with the debut that originally landed them on the map (which will come down to a matter of preference for listeners).

With I, No Longer Pentimento makes good on the promising change of direction first explored in Inside The Sea.  The foundation makes for a natural extension in calm but relatively complex melody that quietly emerges across the twelve accompanying tunes.  Pentimento initially exploded on the scene with quite the initial statement.  While much of that initial fire has since evolved into something more subtle, the resulting craftsmanship remains top notch.
