Interview: Antillectual

AntillectualAntillectual are one of the torchbearer bands for political punk in Europe. Their most recent effort Engage! is only a couple of weeks old, and is their sixth album already. One of the good things about Engage! is that it’s packed with fresh ideas and songs about hot issues, thus avoiding a pitfall of the genre: hitting the same nail over and over again. We had a talk with the Dutch punk rockers on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Brakrock ecofest. There really couldn’t have been a more fitting moment for a chat about Engage! and the songs on it, about European politics and about taking the stage at Punk Rock Holiday for a second time.

Antillectual, who are from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, are a trio that play a socially conscious and energetic blend of punk music, they are a band that wear their influences proudly on their collective sleeves. By creating their own unique blend of stolen riffs and borrowed song titles, Antillectual have created an album that is a hybrid of the finer elements of the last few decades of punk rock. The opening number, Priest Without A Religion, starts with an 80s rock feel, gentle guitars and swirling keyboards abound, but thankfully this is a red herring as at about the minute mark the punk assault kicks in, and from that point forward this is a unrelenting blast of punk energy and melodic hardcore.

What’s clear before you’ve even played a single track is that there is a keen sense of humour present alongside the politically sussed lyrics, titles such as, Europe, This Is Your Final Countown, Appetite For Construction and Obsessive Cosmetic Disorder show an awareness of the past that Antillectual have recycled for the own aims. This is also applicable to their music as well, as their are distinct similarities to the punk bands that came before them. Vocally they are channelling Bad Religion, musically there are two many influences to number, but this is an amalgamation that definately evokes the spirits of previous punk rock glories. That’s not to say that this album is in anyway copying other bands, it is heavy influenced by American punk bands but it has a character all of it’s of its own

Antillectual are carrying the torch for European punk rock far beyond the borders and boundaries of their own country. They aren’t shy about acknowledging their influences, whilst this doesn’t quite hit the heights of the bands that informed their sound, it is a damn fine slab of American style punk rock that is played with a European twist. In addition to their obvious influences they’ve even recruited a few members of some of those bands to make an appearance on Engage! Strike Anywhere‘s Thomas Barnett and BoySetsFire‘s Nathan Gray both make welcome guest appearances on this album. If you have a love of the likes of Bad Religion, Against Me! and Anti-Flag then you will want to investigate Engage!

Engage! is being released worldwide on July 29th through Bird Attack Records (US), Redfield Records (Europe), Waterslide Records (Asia) and Fusa Records (South America).

Video: Antillectual – Racist Rash

AntillectualNijmegen, the Netherlands’ Antillectual has premiered a new music video from their next full length.  The song is titled “Racist Rash” and the disc will be titled Engage, which is set to drop on June 29, 2016 in Europe through Redfield Records, in Asia through Waterslide Records, and in South America through Fusa Records.  The disc follows their 2013 LP, Perspectives And Objectives, available now on A-F Records.  The band comments on the video:

“The song deals with the racism that is still omnipresent in our culture, sports, traditions, policies, etc. A big obstacle in overcoming this is the inability of people to accept that a statement or action without a racist intention can nonetheless have a racist implication. The bullheaded idea that one can perfectly judge a situation one is part of oneself, is another big obstacle. Racism is not an opinion or an ideology, it’s a crime to be convicted or a disease to be cured at best. Don’t let patients diagnose their own case.”

AntillectualDutch melodic punk act Antillectual has announced plans for their next full length.  The band explains that this will not just be “another” new Antillectual album and will feature the band pushing themselves harder than ever before.  The band explains:

“To raise the bar we are taking a completely new approach. Songs are more fine-tuned than before; even more thought and effort is being put in.”

Start from Scratch

Square of Opposition Records
By

Rating: 3/5

If you look directly above this, you’ll see that I put Square of Opposition Records as the record label releasing Antillectual’s third full length album, Start From Scratch. That is, however, a shortcut as there are actually a total of ten different record labels releasing the record throughout Europe with Square of Opposition Records handling the US release. That’s eleven record labels putting money behind the release, promoting it and given it their go ahead.  Most bands have a hard time convincing one label to back them, but Antillectual got eleven; and it makes sense, because Start From Scratch  is pretty damn good.

The Dutch three piece delivers fast, technically proficient melodic hardcore music – with a stronger emphasis on the later than the former. This is smart, political punk that would make Propagandhi proud; and the fact that Chris Hannah sings on Cut The Ground From Under Our Feet (a scathing attack on the mass commercialisation of underground music and sports) indicates that Propagandhi probably approves of the comparison.

There are moments of Strung Out shreddery (see Every Crisis Is A Moral Crisis ‘ epic solo in the bridge)  while others tone the guitar work down and go for the more finger pointed sing-alongs ala Strike Anywhere. There are melodic moments (Chinese Takeover and The New Jew) that resemble Belvedere or This Is A Standoff and they’re not afraid to completely reel it in for softer acoustic number either as they do with So Much More.  Of course, that’s an anomaly in the mix that normally focuses on faster tunes with solid drumming, skate-punk guitar work and versatile vocals that goes from a melodic, near Anti-Flag delivery (Our Hearts) to a rough and worn, Thomas Barnett anthem.

Lyrically, the band tackles a wide variety of political topics but contain it to a “Think Globally, Act Locally” mentality. This ensures that the lyrics are more personal and immediate as they speak about a change that they can actually take part in and implement rather than some far reaching ideal that, while important, may be too big to tackle from basement shows.

As it is, anyone in search of a solid political punk album need look no further than Start From Scratch.
