Alcopop! Records signed Glaswegian indie punk quartet The Spook School last year, and they are now set to release their eagerly anticipated third album, Could It Be Different?, on 26th January 2017. As the next confident step in their career, Could It Be Different? is a storming continuation of the band’s knack for noisy, tuneful and triumphant queer pop songs about identity, sexuality and the self, citing influence from the likes of Buzzcocks, T-Rex and the noisier end of the C86 indie scene.

Still Alive kicks Could It Be Different? off with an adrenalized shot of punk infused indie rock that possesses a barbed chorus of ‘fuck you I’m still alive’, the album continues it’s energetic approach with discordant indie influenced numbers and with the mix of male of female vocals enabling The Spook School to take different approaches that embrace the vintage indie style of the likes of Lush and The Primitives, as well as enduring acts such as The Wedding Present and The Libertines. The pace only drops on the melancholy tracks, Bad Year, that punctuates the midway point of the album, and High School, that brings Could It Be Different? to a thoughtful and reflective close.

Despite the album cover Could It Be Different? is an album that shows that The Spook School are a band to be taken seriously, I’ll admit that I hadn’t encountered them prior to the release of this album, but on the strength of Could It Be Different? I’ll be hunting down their first two albums and hoping that I can catch them when they appear at the Manchester Punk Festival later this year. Could It Be Different? is an album that embraces the spirit of the dawn of the indie scene, and blends it with a touch of vintage punk energy to create something that is vibrant and current, but gives a knowing nod to the bands that came before them.

Evolve Or Die

Rating: 3.5/5

Brighton trio Tigercub will release their new EP, Evolve or Die, on the 29th September via Alcopop! Records, and the EP will be available on limited edition red vinyl and through all good digital platforms. The EP is the first new material from Tigercub since the release their debut album, Abstract Figures In The Dark, and the evocative title of Evolve or Die is a mantra for a band who are constantly transitioning into something entirely different, and who want their fans to expect the unexpected on each and every release.

The Divided States Of Us starts with a almost haunting introduction that kicks into an intense drum beat, this track embraces the nature of the Chemical Brothers but delivers the intense dance beats through conventional instruments, and it’s clear that Tigercub have evolved since I saw them live just a few brief months ago. Into the Ashes brings a dark element of alt rock into the EP that recalls the desert rock of Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age, It’s Only Love continues this influence but takes the pace right down and brings the EP’s most blissed out moment. Evolve Or Die Closes with Faking Laughter, a melancholy slice of hazy indie rock that contains a treble laced guitar riff that haunts the track.

Evolve Or Die is an EP from a band who refuse to stay still long enough to be pigeonholed, this EP embraces dance, alternative, alt rock and indie and their influences and style shift effortlessly on each track. With the Evolve Or Die EP it’s clear that Tigercub are going to keep us guessing as to what direction their next release will take, and as I noted when I caught them live earlier this year at Manchester’s Sound Control, even when you think you’ve got a handle on Tigercub another card is dealt from the bottom of the pack to keep you off balance.

Video: Best Ex – See You Again

Best Ex ICSBest Ex, formerly known as Candy Hearts, have premiered a new music video for the song “See You Again.”  The track appears on their Alcopop! Records debut EP, Ice Cream Anti Social, released earlier this summer. The band comments on the track:

“I think sometimes in our lives we’re gifted with certain people who completely change the perspective we’ve had our entire lives. I wrote ‘See You Again’ about one of those people I met on Warped Tour.  He lived so, so far away from me. It felt like every day was just counting down to when we’d never see each other again. We would meet each other every day at catering and watch the sunset together almost every night.

I’m not the kind of person who can’t not roll their eyes at that, but he really taught me to appreciate each moment in a day and live inside every second rather than looking forward and missing a bunch of your life thinking about things you can’t change. I still struggle with that today. And I was also completely wrong. I did see him again, and he met my mom and met my dad and is coming to my sister’s wedding.”

Ice Cream Anti Social

Best Ex, formerly known as Candy Hearts, have signed to Alcopop! Records and their first release for the label is the wonderfully titled Ice Cream Anti Social EP, that is due for release on the on 14th July 2017. This six track EP is the first to be released under the band’s new moniker and sees the band heading into a new indie fuelled poppier direction, Ice Cream Anti Social is a glistening artistic re-imagination for the band, one that sees the band take the heartfelt lyricism and hooks from their previous punkier releases as Candy Hearts and bring them into their new looser and poppier direction.

Girlfriend opens things with a distinctly electro pop influenced opener, despite the change in style I can hear how this song would have sounded if it had been recorded in their previous incarnation, the whole EP has a poppy indie sheen that’s underpinned by an electro pop feel and the guitars are now very much playing second fiddle to the indie sheen and ethereal vocals. Whilst I preferred the more punky style of Candy Hearts the songwriting that characterised their previous releases is still very much alive, it’s just realised in a much more summery and poppy manner.

This is a summery blast of electronic indie pop, for me I personally preferred the sweet pop punk delivery of the previous albums, but if you were a fan of Candy Hearts then the melodies and shining vocals that were their trademark are still present and just as likely to melt your heart. It’s a brave move for a band to make such a dramatic shift in style, and after hearing the new direction the band has taken you can understand why they changed their name rather than continue as Candy Hearts. This new direction won’t be for everyone, but for those who enjoy a slice of summery indie pop then Ice Cream Anti Social may be just what you’re looking for.

Are You Sure?

Alcopop Records

Rating: 3.5/5

Peaness are following up their recent succession of left-field, anthemic singles with this latest bundle of joy, Are You Sure? is a solid collection of lo-fi, infectious, sugar coated indie pop from the up and coming Cheshire trio. Their new EP Are You Sure? was released yesterday, the 5th May 2017, via Alcopop! Records on a ‘Mellow Yellow’ vinyl, that is limited to just 500 copies, that is packaged with their 2015 debut EP, No Fun, and an additional bonus track.

The Are You Sure? EP is a timely release as spring is upon us and this is a distinctly summery blast of indie pop, from the uptempo opening track, Oh George, to the oddly titled closing track, Ugly Veg, this is an EP that is the perfect soundtrack to lost afternoons. The superb Seafoam Islands, for me the stand out track from the EP, brings a slightly more downbeat element to the EP and carries a very slight post punk influence, but for the main part this is summery indie pop that is delivered exactly as it oughta be, the tracks Same Place and Skin Surfing carry the hallmarks of the best of the indie scene and the whole EP is delivered in a stripped down style that is strangely hypnotic.

Their name might be a somewhat childish play on words but Are You Sure? is an accomplished five track EP that recalls the heyday of the UK indie scene, the Chester based trio have produced an EP of jangly guitar anthems that are accompanied by lush vocal harmonies. Peaness will be playing a host of festivals over the summer months, including Handmade Festival, FestEvol Gardens and Truck Festival and I can’t think of a better band to be the soundtrack to the inevitably hazy afternoons that the festival season generates.

The People Are Revolting

Rating: 3.5/5

UK alt-rock band Freeze The Atlantic are releasing their third album, The People Are Revolting, tomorrow, the 14th April 2017, via Alcopop! Records. The album follows on from their 2014 sophomore album, this time around the album was recorded in a hectic week in a studio with the aim of capturing their live sound for the new album. The People Are Revolting is an album that indicates that Freeze The Atlantic have a growing social conscience, something that’s unsurprising given the times we live in, and the album touches on political and social issues across it’s eleven tracks.

The album opens with the instrumental El Nitro, this gentle introduction eases you into the album before Annotate My Fate kicks in giving you the first taste of their full blooded alt rock. The title track of the album follows on with fuzzy driven riff before slows things down with rocky Altogether Not Together, with the album’s finest moment coming in the form of Gunnar Hansen, a track the channels Queens Of The Stone Age‘s glory years. The album carries on in this vein, veering between a rock sensibility and the darker underlying alt-rock tones, never seeming to quite know which side of the fence they land on.

If there is a problem with Freeze The Atlantic it’s that they don’t seem to be sure where their loyalties lie, the album veers between a darker alt rock sound and some straight up rock, they are equally proficient at both but you can’t help getting the feeling that there are at least two distinct songwriters within the band, as the difference between the styles is as clear as night and day. Singer Liv Puente delivers as good a vocal performance as you’ll hear on an album of this type, and The People Are Revolting is a flawlessly produced and slick album that walks the line that divides the co-existing worlds of rock and alternative.

Danish Trio Nelson Can Sign To Alcopop! Records

Nelson CanAlcopop! Records have announced the signing of Danish trio Nelson Can who will release their new EP on the label later this year. The trio was founded in 2011 and started out as an outright lie, there was no band, the girls just really wanted to tell people that they were in one, so they did. With a noticeable lack of guitars, their back-to-basics drum and bass orientated sound is original and simple, inspired by acts like The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
