Carousell would seem to be a band that are drawn to the dark side of post-punk influences, the quartet inhabit the territory where The Cure, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Horrors can be found lurking, and now they are set to unleash their debut EP, Immortal. The band boasts an impressive pedigree including former members of The Bisons, Punx Soundcheck and Adam And The Ants to inform a release that draws on both the past and present of the post punk era as well as the gothic and alternative scenes that followed in it’s wake.
The heady bass driven introduction of the EP’s impressive title track builds into a driven atmospheric post punk number is heavily reminiscent of JuJu era Siouxsie And The Banshees, an album whose influence pervades across the whole of the Immortal EP. The following track, Love in Vain, kicks things into a different gear, but it remains firmly embedded in the post punk style of the late seventies and early eighties. Lullaby is a haunting addition to the quartet of tracks before the closing number, Pandora, brings the Immortal EP full circle with a return to the phased bass and boding style of the opening track.
Immortal is an impressive debut EP by anyone standards, it must be acknowledged that it does seem to be something of a throwback to a previous era, but it comes across more as an authentic love letter to the darker female fronted post punk and early goth bands of the era rather than being a pale imitation. If you have any love for the likes of The Au Pairs, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Bauhaus and The Chameleons then Carousell‘s debut EP will be a release that provides something new for your playlist, that you will find is simultaneously delivered in a style that will be both welcoming and familiar.
The Immortal EP is set to be released on the 29th December 2017
