Butane Regulators

#bringyournan - One Step Outside Records

Hastings, UK punk quartet Butane Regulators have returned with their oddly titled second EP “#bringyournan” that is out now on CD and digital formats via One Step Outside Records, a label dedicated to the UK’s DIY punk scene. In many ways Butane Regulators were tailor made for the label, everything from the album art to the EP’s musical and lyrical content, and the fact that the “#bringyournan” EP delivers it’s seven tracks in around ten minutes, means this is punk rock done for no ones benefit apart from Butane Regulators, which is just as it oughta be.

Content Irrelevant” kicks things off and straight out of the blocks it’s a fast infectious punk riff that recalls the chaos of the much missed Creaming Jesus, this is swiftly followed by the splendid “Eat Shit And Die“. Two of the EP’s tracks, “Splash The Fash” and “Eight Count (Mice Pie Edition)“, are amongst the shortest I’ve ever encountered, the latter of which steals the shortest song in my collection accolade from the previous joint holders of NOFX and The Crash Mats. The remainder of the “#bringyournan” EP continues to veer between the irreverent, “I Shat Myself” and “Red Coat Murder“, to the political sharpness of the EP’s finest moment, “Blood Media“.

Butane Regulators don’t take themselves too seriously, but there are moments when political rage spills through into the “#bringyournan” EP, something that provides some balance to the knock about punk rock of the majority of the tracks. At times this is old school punk rock, at times it borders on hardcore punk and then again it’s contemporary DIY punk rock The “#bringyournan” EP is mass of contradictions, but rather than being a drawback I think that this is the EP’s strength, especially when you consider that digital version of the EP costs less than a can of most popular soft drinks.
