Call To Preserve

Unsinkable - Strike First Records

Oh, how I miss writing about straight-edge bands. This band is indeed very straight edge and very Christian, I could tell when the vocalist shouts,”My body is the temple of the living God. Nothing harmful to my mind runs through these veins. I choose to live my life drug free.” Then it proceeds to go into a breakdown. This album seems fairly simple, not much really changes up, straight-edge lyrics from start to finish, transitions from breakdowns to filler to fast rhythms. It’s a pretty solid album and it happens to be under 30 minutes so it wasn’t tough to listen to from start to finish. But with the majority of the songs sounding fairly similar, nothing really stood out. I’m sure they’d be great to see at a show though, the guitar riffs don’t seem to complicated, but they’re perfect to get a nice pit started up. The same goes for the drumming, plenty of cymbal use and double kick rhythms, they kept me fairly entertained. The bass wasn’t as audible as I would have liked, it blends in far too much. The music does get into very slow breakdowns that can get painful at times. I would have preferred a cd filled with songs more like their track Pay The Price, it keeps up a really fast beat and kind of reminds me of a faster Terror song. This band really has a lot of potential that I don’t think they’re really living up to.

I’d recommend checking this band out, they’re not bad, but straight-edge bands of this breed seem to be dying out. The only thing I didn’t really like about this band is they aren’t much different than something I’ve heard a hundred times and listening to them gets a little boring after about 20 minutes. But I’d rather see a million clones of this band than have to endure one more poppy rock band claiming to be emo. Hopefully this cd will grow on me a bit more, I know that lots of bands like this in past have done that. I’ll feel fairly indifferent to them at first, then all of a sudden they’re all I listen to. So take a gander at these guys, Strike First can usually be trusted to sign some pretty good bands.
