During the rehearsal day of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, I ran into Bryce Avery – the mastermind behind the power-pop act The Rocket Summer. In the middle of catching up with old friends and preparing for the tour, Avery took the time to discuss the upcoming summer festival and let me know exactly why the tour is so good and what bands need to do to survive it.

Austin, Texas’ Riverboat Gamblers have been busy making a name for themselves over the past few years. After a few smaller releases, the band broke to a broader fan base with their breakthrough 2005 Volcom Entertainmentdebut, To The Confusion of Our Enemies, and never looked back. A constant touring schedule has kept them busy – touring all over the world in small venues, big venues and the occasional festival or two. One of those festivals is, of course, The Vans Warped Tour and 2010 saw the band play the entire tour for the second time. Touring in support of 2009′s Underneath The Owl with a recovering Ian Macdougall on guitar, Riverboat Gamblers were out there every day putting on a hectic performance that seems to, more often than not, end up with front man Mike Wiebe climbing all over the stage and speakers.
On the first day of the tour I caught up with the energetic singer to discuss his anticipation for the tour and everything he remembered from doing it before in 2005.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I did quite a lot of interviews during the first two days of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour but out of everyone who was playing the festival (and trust me, there’s a lot of bands), one of the bands I was most excited to speak to was Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band.
On last year’s Warped Tour I considered the band to be “the most punk band despite being decidedly unpunk” and I spoke of their live show constantly. The results of my conversation with Reverend Peyton and his wife, ”Washboard” Breezy Peyton, could not have gone any better. They were exactly as you would imagine and gave some of the most quotable answers I’ve ever heard (I mean “in a margarine world, we are butter” and “they’re either good or they’re bad – it doesn’t matter what’s in their pants;” you can’t get better one liners than that). They were down to earth and, like they claimed, incredibly real and unafraid to speak plainly and honestly about anything and everything.
The conversation once again proved that Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is one of the most punk bands around despite being decidedly unpunk.

On Sunday, the 2010 Vans Warped Tour rolls to an end and while we still have a few interviews (and a photo gallery of pictures from the Edmonton, Alberta show) to post; as the tour comes to an end, so does our on-going coverage of it.
Over the past several weeks we’ve posted tons of interviews, photos and articles about the tour and today I’m wrapping it all up with The Vans Warped Tour 2010 – Edmonton and Beyond where I look at my feelings for the tour and examine the day that the tour stopped in Edmonton for the first time.
The full story is below; but like I said – keep your eyes peeled for more interviews and pictures to go live soon.

Automatic Loveletter were one of the many bands you could’ve seen during the 2010 Vans Warped Tour has it passed through your town. The rock band released their SonyJapan debut, Truth or Dare a few days before the tour and were just gearing up to show everyone the new songs when I sat down with front woman Juliet Simms and her brother Tommy Simms. We talked about the secrets to surviving the tour (salt and potassium, who would’ve guessed?), their troubles with their former labels and Juliet’s love for the nineties among other things.

When San Francisco’s Set Your Goals came out with their Epitaph Records debut, This Will Be The Death Of Us, last year – no one expected the reaction the album would garner. Sure, people were excited to hear it and there was a lot of anticipation; but it would’ve been hard to guess that the record would throw them to the forefront of an emerging genre. It did, and it deserved all the accolades it received because ultimately the record was incredibly well executed.
Since the release of the record, the band has been touring non-stop. I sat down with front man Jordan Brown during their hometown Warped Tour show for a few minutes to discuss the tour, the reaction to their album and why he started a band in the first place.

Today’s the fifth week in our on-going coverage of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour that kicked off on June 25th in Carson, California and runs all the way through to the middle of August – hitting 43 cities in a total of 51 days.
Each week, on top of posting numerous interviews from the first two days of the tour, we’ve looked at the different elements of the tour and today’s topic is the ever growing number of female musicians and performers on the Vans Warped Tour. We talked to the singers themselves to see exactly why they think it is that more and more girls are forming punk bands and bring their band on the road.
I’d also like to thank the talented Cary Liao from SonicShooter.com for snapping the live pictures for this feature.

A few months ago, I interviewed Jimmy Stadt of Polar Bear Club and it was one of my favourite interviews I’ve ever done because it ended up being so very random. When I was introduced to Chris Browne, the guitarist of Polar Bear Club as we waited in the catering line up at the opening day of the 2010 Warped Tour, he immediately brought up the interview saying how he had enjoyed reading it which meant I wasn’t the only one who really liked it. We talked for a bit, ate some delicious food and then he headed off to play their set for the day. When we met up again a few hours later, Chris and I found a quiet table to sit at and talk about the tour. Chris began the interview saying how he didn’t know if he’ll be able to give the same type of interview that Jimmy and I had done the last March but that he’d try; and while the interview wasn’t quite as random (we stayed more on topic this time around), it was still an exciting, entertaining and – most importantly – insightful interview. I’d say he held up pretty well. Turns out all the guys in Polar Bear Club know how to give a good interview.

The Pretty Reckless are a rather young band; having only formed in 2009 and without a proper release to their name (their debut comes out in August), you may not have heard much more than their single Make Me Wanna Die but chances are you’ve probably heard the name already. The band has shot to pop-culture prominence because it’s fronted by sixteen year old Taylor Momsen, best known for portraying Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl and Cindy Lou in the Grinch That Stole Christmas. There’s more to them than just that though, and any preconceived notions you may have when you hear “that actress in Gossip Girl sings in it” are probably way wrong. The Pretty Reckless are not your run-of-the-mill radio pop filler but actually have some chops to them. Momsem, while being young, has a voice that most people would kill for and while the press will harp on her provocative outfits, she’s really just a modern day Cherie Curie mixed with some Courtney Love.
During the second day of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, I caught up with three of the four members of The Pretty Reckless - Taylor Momsen, Ben Philips and Mark Damon - backstage to have a quick chat about those preconceived notions, how they got on Warped Tour, Kick Ass and stripper shoes.

Today we’re proud to bring you our seventh interview in our on-going Vans Warped Tour coverage. Today’s interview in with Dave McWane of Big D & The Kids Table – one of the biggest names in ska-punk at the moment. They’re a band filled with energy and creativeness, that invented a new style that they dubbed “Stroll” and never seem to have a moment’s rest.
An hour before they took the stage for their one and only Warped Tour appearance this year, I ran into McWane and asked him a few questions. Of note, he talked about completing a new album:
We also have a new record coming out soon called the Damned, The Dumb and the Delirious. It’s going to be total ska-punk and it should be out in the fall….I think this is going to be really fast, loud; I don’t think there’s going to be any slower songs on it. It’s going to be really balls to the wall. We just wanted to do that because we realized those songs are more kind of fun to play live.
He also talked about the mixture of styles on The Warped Tour saying:
I always had a joke that fans would get really pissed off if they saw the bands backstage. Because a lot of kids define themselves by “I like Gallows” or “I like All-American Rejects” or “I like Rancid” and “you don’t like this so I don’t like you.” What they don’t understand is backstage everyone pals around and everyone’s friends. NOFX is friends with 3Oh3!. So the bands get along, the bands don’t care but the fans sometimes define themselves by the bands. I think Warped Tour at least does that for the bands; the kids still might draw a line in the sand but the bands learn to get rid of that judging.
I’ll go on tour and I’ll be like “man, I hate that band so much” but then in a week I’m like “but they’re the nicest guys I ever met.”
The full interview, including a fantastic comment about The Millionaires, can be read here. Check back soon for more interviews with the likes of Polar Bear Club, The Casualties, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Pretty Reckless and more.

For the third story in today’s on-going coverage of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, Felicia Stanikmas walks through the reasoning she keeps coming back to the Warped Tour year after year. Ignoring the naysayers who say that a 24 year old has now place on the tour, Felicia is a proud Warped attendee and will be for as long as she can be.
Check back in an hour to see this week’s photo gallery for the tour.
