A lot of things happen each and every week that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of everything. If you’re somehow without internet access for a day, you could miss a big tour announcement or signing – and we don’t want that to happen. That’s why we have “The Week That Was” where we will recap the more important news stories from the past week.
Last year, Matt Pryor (of The Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams fame), began a Kickstater program to help fund the release of his new solo album. After raising twice his original goal, he was able to put that money into the recording and release of May Day - which was released last week on his own label, Nightshoes Syndicate.

Burbank/San Francisco’s The Shell Corporation have signed with Solidarity Recordings to re-release their debut full length album, Force Majeure. The album will be available through digital outlets and in 12″ vinyl format in April 2012. It was previously self released in CD format and available digitally for free from Death to False Hope Records.

A day before we ring in the new year (and a few hours before I jump on an 18 hour greyhound bus ride back home to Vancouver), I’m incredibly pleased to present to you – our loyal readers – our annual look back at the last 365 days.
This year was an incredible year for music and all of us here at ThePunkSite.com found albums that we fell in love with. We’re taking this time to share those albums with you in hopes that you will check them out and discover your next favourite band. While a few albums appear several times across the various lists, this year is quite different than the last few as all the writers have selected a wide variety of albums that they have found noteworthy.
So, without further ado, we leave you with ThePunkSite.com’s 2011 Year In Review. Select a name and read their list and don’t forget to leave your favourite albums in the comments.
I met up with Nick Kouremenos, the bearded bassist from This Is A Standoff, at Remedy café near the University of Alberta and Whyte Ave in Edmonton, Alberta on a cool fall day. Despite the drop in temperature Nick came in wearing shorts and a big smile, eagerly talking about the ten week tour the band had just completed, which spanned Canada, as well as many European countries. Having attended the same small rural school briefly in our youth, we sat down to discuss our mutual love of punk music that brought us back together more than a decade later.
On this lazy Sunday afternoon, we’re pleased to present your eyes with a gift of looking at a bunch of new live photos that we have added to our ever growing media gallery.
Today’s update is a doozy of an update with photos from two different cities covering a wide variety of bands and styles.
Our second set of photos comes from a recent ska show that took place at the Vogue theatre in Vancouver and was captured by Nick Bukowski. You can check out pictures of Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifestohere and here respectively.

Standing outside of a dirty venue, half a block from the Occupy Edmonton campsite, I spoke with the duo known asAndrew Jackson Jihad. The guys had just finished performing in front of a sweaty club full of people who were either singing along with their songs or standing silently in awe. It was clear that AJJ had won over a legion of fans in a cold land a far cry from their sunny hometown of Phoenix, Arizona.

Before interviewing Frank Turner, I had seen him play solo a handful of times. The last time was in the early afternoon in a tent at a folk festival, where he lazed limply in the throes of a vicious hangover between songs. But even in that miserable state, he was fully animated and smiling during his songs. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down with him in the back of his bus on his first headlining North American tour. We sat down and proceeded to have a wonderful talk about everything from our mutual love of John K. Samson to high school exams. He was as friendly and welcoming as you would expect from a guy who pens catchy songs that invite the entire audience to sing along.

There was one thing that become immediately evident as I was sitting backstage at Rexall place in in Edmonton, Alberta with the guys from The Black Pacific on their recent tour opening for Rise Against. That was the fact that they were extremely welcome guys. Offering me a sandwich and something to drink no less than 5 times, our time together felt more like a casual conversation than a formal interview; which says a lot about the guys’ wonderful personalities. We discussed a variety of things over the course of our time together, from stealing hockey sticks to overcoming the shadow of former bands. Their casual demeanor was in direct contrast to the serious punk rock that they play live; with dedication and skill that betrays the various members’ pedigrees in the music business. While the band may be a relatively new name on the scene, The Black Pacific are setting their sights on playing together for the long run.
New Jersey’s The Bouncing Souls have just released a new digital album album entitled For All The Unheard. The album is available digitally on a USB stick.
The album was recorded over a span of four nights earlier this year in Los Angeles and the Troubadour. It was during their For All The Unheardtour series which saw the band play all eight of their albums front to back – playing two albums a night over four nights in various cities.
