On May 31st, two Montreal punk bands – Prevenge and Dig It Up – released a split vinyl through Pavones Recordswhich is limited to a pressing of 500 on white (100) and black (400) vinyl. To get the record out to more people, they have teamed up with our good friends at Juicebox Recording Co. to offer the split as a free / donation-based download.
It’s also worth noting that both bands have released previous EPs on Juicebox, which you can also download for free or donate toward if you’re so inclined. Check out Prevenge’s It Happens All The Time and Magnets from Dig It Up.
Recycled Rockstar Industries have released 3 free compilations for your listening pleasure. A good mixture of pop punk, punk rock, and indie. A review of Volume III by our own, Cole Faulkner, can be found here.

Hello friends. I’m your Broosevelts girl. Are you tired, run-down, listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? The answer to all your problems is in this little EP: DUIOU. Yes, DUIOU contains drunken good times, raspy vocals, and humorous song titles. Yes, with DUIOU, you can dance your way to health. All you do is take a great, big earful after every meal. Mmmmmmm….. It’s so tasty, too! Tastes just like candy! So why don’t you join all the thousands of happy peppy people and download DUIOU tomorrow! That’s D-U-I-O-U! (wink)
Here’s an interesting split between two bands. The Glocca Morra hails from Florida, and The Greek Favourites comes from Pennsylvania, but they both feature a ragged sound like that of The Menzingers, The Holy Mess, and Captain, We’re Sinking. Six songs total, three by each band, and just as many good times.

This one has been sitting in my inbox for a while, and after giving it a listen, I know this one should have been posted much, much sooner. That’s Life is “3 dudes from Arizona,” and apparently they already have an album out there by the name of Bourbon Entrails, and it’s great. Sloppy, poppy, quick and unapologetic, it’s a must have in the land of free downloads. But the band is also gearing up for the release of Saloon Songs, their sophomore effort, which they’re also generously giving away for free. It’s available months ahead of its summer street date, and is a top notch followup that builds off of an an already firm foundation. Sarcastic, depressed, and witty punk well worth checking out.
Our good friends at Juiceboxdotcom.com are at it again with yet another fantastic pay what you can release. This time though they’ve set it up with two great bands: The Decay and Waryfarer. This is a record that deserves to be heard. Don’t trust us? Listen to what Juiceboxdotcom.com had to say:
We’ve been hearing bits and pieces of this record over the past few months, but having it hit you in the chest as a straight 38 minutes of brilliantly-crafted mini punk anthems is going to melt your black heart. These are some of our best buds, and these are some of their best songs. We’re really effing proud to have this record available to you, our inter-buds. Play these loud and often.
Don’t trust them either? Well damn, just download it for yourself and you’ll see that they’re right.
The always wonderful people at Juiceboxdot.com have finally released their first release of 2011 in the form of The Roman Line‘s Pissing Into The Wind. As they so eloquently describe it:
“The Roman Line were one of the best bud-bands we had. They were great dudes and they wrote great songs and worked super hard and this stupid city never gave them enough respect. When we found out they were breaking up instead of recording the amazing record that these demos were hinting at, it was actually a totally shocking bummer. I guess you just assume that you and your friends will probably play in the same bands until you’re all old and dead. Or, at least, I do. Every one of these dudes will do something great musically, but man, this band was good. It’s our pleasure to add this collection to our… collection.”
Death To False Hope Records is at it again and have released another fantastic album for free download. This time it comes in the form of Eat Bay’s Why I Hate with their album Hieroglyphic Transmissions; which, by the way, features artwork by the always amazing Keith Rosson.
For fans of Menzingers, Hot Water Music, Samiam and more.
Teen-Rebel Dopefiends who released their debut E.P in January on Not Shy Of The DIY are a Grimsby bred, Leeds based four piece punk band who take influences from areas such as Chicago Blues/Rock and Roll, Minneapolis Punk (The Replacements/Early Soul Asylum) Swampy Floridian Punk (Against Mecirca 1998/Grabass Charlestons) and a dose of The Clash for good measure. All of which combines for a theor own brand of blues layered punked up rock and roll on the road to play here-there-or-whatever shithole over the course of 2011.
Sometimes you find a hidden gem on your iPod that you’ve forgotten about. The other day, I discovered Hold Tight! as their album – Can’t Take This Away – sat front and centre in my iPod as I was searching for something to play while at work. Having no recollection of downloading this, I figured I should give it a spin and see if it was worthy enough to stay on my full iPod. One song in, I knew this was worthy to stay.
Think Captain, We’re Sinking just not as raw, Hold Tight! are an emotional punk rock band that are, pardon the pun, very tight. Crisp vocals full of passion alongside energetic riffs and solid drumming – this is what you want to hear in sweaty clubs and hall shows.
