The Wild / Run, Forever – Split

The Wild are easily one of my favourite new discoveries from last year. My friend introduced me to them at The Fest and they were the highlight of the weekend (and, in turn, became a cornerstone segment in a screenplay I wrote). Their socially aware, pro-community folk punk is pretty much unmatched by anyone in today’s game and their split with Pittsburgh’s Run, Forever pushes that forward. With that said though, Run, Forever aren’t too shabby either as their latest album – The Devil, Death, and Me – has been in heavy rotation in my CD player in the last couple of months.

Barefaced Cynics – Be Greatful

Acoustic punk with a great British accent a la Frank Turner. I don’t use that comparison lightly, Barefaced Cynics also have a great way with words. I know very little about this band other than that their Be Grateful EP is a fantastic introduction to a clearly very talented young group and bodes well for future endeavors.

Snotty, low-fi pop-punk with a folk tinged vocal delivery, Our Lady fall in the middle of The Wild and Mixtapes and Greenland is Melting. Sounds interesting right? Well luckily, they have just released two of their albums online for free through bandcamp.

The first is an plugged in, nine-track album called Dirt Cheap while the second is an eight song acoustic b-side compilation.

Cynics – Dave & Angela EP

Why I Hope/Why I Hate has released a follow up to their previous single. This time the stripped down acoustic Why I Hope track comes first, with the full band version following next. I won’t bother retyping all the details about about the band again, but if you’re interested in this unique project, check out my first post about them. Alexander Hudjohn – Acreage EP

Former Anchor Arms member Alexander Hudjohn has just released his debut EP, Acreage. It’s a great little slice of country punk (actually, that’s an understatement, these tracks take a really epic, powerful stance, perfect for the EP’s narrative style), and even features an appearance by one of my favourite vocalists Jay Northington (of Nothington). It’s almost like a stripped down combination of Murder By Death and Ghoultown, only with no need for any of the novelty genre stuff. Great stuff worth checkout out.
