Featuring members of Trigger Effect and Mountain Dust, lΛVΛl (pronounced laval),  have a sparkling new EP for you to drown yourself in.

The Montreal quartet released the EP, dubbed IΛVΛl I,  on November 19th and it features fun song titles such as “Stay Gold”, “Graceful Debt” and “Liar Liar House on Fire”; but this is anything but a cheeky, playful listening. With a strong metal influence and drums so loud they give Raw Power a run for it’s money, these 6 tracks will give any hardcore fan a nice warm feeling. What can I say about hardcore that I haven’t said before?

It’s aggressive but makes you feel totally safe with that aggression. Though I admit I have not seen this band live, I will still support you seeing them in your hometown (most likely somewhere in Ontario or Quebec) if they should visit. Something tells me they would rip.

You can stream it here.

Have you seen the documentary One Nine Nine Four? This is better than that. (A part of me wants to end my review here, but that might be ‘irresponsible’ or ‘leaving too much to the imagination’). So, here we go, a little review about a fun documentary.

Fat Wreck has officially been around for 25 years. Unlike last year when they were holding celebrations around the world for their 25th anniversary only to realize it was 24 years. 25 official years of Fat Wreck has accumulated more stories than I’m sure an 85minute film can encapsulate, but it seems like the best of the best made the final cut. And if that’s not the truth than Fat Wreck Chords is more messed up and more fun than we outsiders will ever know. From stories of the very beginning, including how the first five bands got signed, to a band drugging Fat Mike’s beer in hopes of upping the party a few notches to how the Fat Wreck sound came about, every inch is entertaining.

I’m trying not to say much because you are going to see it, don’t lie to me. Fat Wreck fan or not, if you love punk you are going to watch it. You might not tell the world you’re going to, but we all know it’s going to happen and why the fuck not? This whole movie is a love letter to punk and why it’s important to keep DIY alive. If you have faith in the scene it’s your benefit to check this out. I really hope you do and if in the end you think One Nine Nine Four is better then let me know because I just don’t see that happening.

Something Was Supposed to Happen is the second EP from London, Ontario’s Grievances being released this June; and so far I’ve had the pleasure of listening to the album twice.

The first time I was hearing it while enjoying a lazy afternoon on my bed. The second time while having a shitty shitty day. Although I am writing this review during the second listen on this shitty day convinced that everything in the world is the worst, this album would be the exception.

I could go on and on, track by track about the detailed specifics and overall “vibe” but I won’t, because this is 2016 and that stuff went out of fashion with Pitchfork. Specifics and vibes isn’t what life is about.

What I will say is these four tacks will haunt you. They will haunt you in a way a beautiful, sunny July afternoon sitting in a parking lot with friends, drinking beer and warm vodka straight from the bottle before wandering the sidewalks and forest, finally crashing by the neighbours pool while they are away on vacation would haunt you. You will look back on these songs feeling warm, nostalgic, confident about your life choices and a bit greasy.

These fine men have conjured up a wicked mix of dark, dreamy punk rock to enjoy with a tall boy of flat Pilsner on your best friend’s porch while sweat caused by the rays of the sun cleanses your body of the damage you endured the night before.

Essential listening for our eventual summer ’16.

Formed in 1978, Montreal’s The Nils have been around the block a few times. They grew up in the punk scene, helped mold it, define it and become a staple in the Canadian punk history textbooks.

Despite their lengthy career, that doesn’t mean they’re anywhere close to slowing down. No, The Nils are still going strong. Touring, releasing new material and helping promote the punk rock ethos. Front man Carlos Soria gives us the lowdown on the band’s history, the evolution of the style that he loves and holds so dear to his heart and tells us exactly what the band has coming down the pipeline.
